Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Black Men Teach (BMT) recruits, prepares, places, and retains Black male teachers in elementary schools by building a robust pathway to the teaching profession, beginning in high school and continuing to support men through college and into their teaching career. BMT began in 2018 based on research that told us that a diverse teacher corps improves student outcomes for all children, especially children of color. Black students in elementary school who have at least one Black male teacher are 29% less likely to drop out of school. Those who have two Black male teachers are 32% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education. Since its start in 2018, BMT has gone from a start-up, to serving 12 Black men in 2020, 42 in 2021 and 63 in 2022. To support our rapid ramp up in programming, our staffing and budgeted spend are ramping up. We are developing a coalition of schools, school districts, teacher training and scholarship programs, and community organizations to achieve this objective.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

BMT has an Executive Committee (EC), which consists of the Board Chair and Chairs of the standing committees. Unless otherwise provided by the Board of Directors (BOD), during intervals between meetings of the BOD, the EC has the power to take action that may be taken by the BOD, other than the power to remove or appoint directors, committee members or officers; amend or repeal bylaws, amend or repeal any vote or action taken by the BOD; or exercise any power that the directors are prohibited from delegating. Any action taken by the EC is reported to the BOD at the next board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The 990 draft was reviewed by our auditors, CLA, then reviewed by our Finance Committee and a draft was provided to our board members at least a week before the board meeting and was discussed at the board meeting, all prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Annually, the conflict of interest policy is provided to directors and employees, and there is a process to ensure that each director and employee returns a signed copy. The process is monitored by the chair of the Governance Committee. Any potential conflicts of interest identified are brought to the full board for discussion and resolution.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

BMT's Board of Directors uses salary and compensation data provided by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits as a reference in determining the Executive Director's compensation package. For other positions, as per board policy, the Executive Director provides the Executive Committee with position descriptions and salary recommendations. These salary recommendations also use the MN Council of Nonprofits survey as a reference. The Executive Committee approves the salaries in the job descriptions.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part X, Line 1

BMT has cash and investments of $3,752,670 at June 30, 2024. Success with our proof of concept has us now focused on a longer term goal of to having over 100 black male teachers and place them in the schools in Minnesota with over 40% students of color. Achieving this longer term goal will take the cash BMT has accumulated in its early years, along with additional funding.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 - Black Men Teach is organized as a Minnesota nonprofit corporation and has been recognized by the IRS as exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c). The Organization is annually required to file a Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax (Form 990) with the iRS. In addition, the Organization is subject to income taxes on net income that is derived from business activities that are unrelated to its exempt purpose. The Organization believes it is not subject to unrelated business income tax and has not filed an Exempt Organization Income Tax Return (Form 990-T) with the IRS.

IRS990/Desc0TEACHERS - Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), Instructional Coaching and Alternative Certification. Most teachers graduate school with student loan debt, and Black men have significantly more debt than their white counterparts. This burden often leads men to leave the profession. SLRP pays off the principal amount of student debt held by practicing teachers over a five-year period. For fiscal 2024 sixteen men were directly supported by this program and approximately 400 elementary school students benefited from them remaining in the classroom. An instructional coach visits each teacher's classroom to critique their teaching methods to improve student learning and participation. Alternative Certification is a program that run for 3 months each summer to prepare a college student for certification as a teacher.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Black Men Teach (BMT) recruits, prepares, places, and retains Black male teachers in elementary schools by building a robust pathway to the teaching profession, beginning in high school and continuing to support men through college and into their teaching career. Since its start in 2018, BMT has gone from serving 12 Black men in 2020, to nearly 100 in fiscal 2024. To support our rapid ramp up in programming, our staffing and budgeted spend are ramping up. We are developing a coalition of schools, school districts, teacher training and scholarship programs, and community organizations to achieve our objective.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COLLEGE - Scholarships, Student Teaching Stipends and Internships, Leadership Coaching and Non-traditional Pilot Program for Licensure - In an effort to offset the financial burden their education, Black Men Teach offers up to $20,000 scholarships to its participants. These scholarships are provided to men who are active participants in our program and are paid over four years. To qualify, students provide BMT with transcripts, confirming their class status, current course schedules, academic credits and fee statements. BMT offers these as "last dollar" scholarships. In the fiscal 2024, thirteen received scholarships. Student teaching, required to earn a degree and become a licensed teacher, is a significant financial burden for students. Because this activity is full time, for a period of 12 to 16 weeks, it precludes the student from earning outside income from a full or part time job. Therefore, many students leave the teaching track at this late stage because of this burden. BMT assists its teaching candidates by providing a stipend or paying for their internship during this part of their education. In fiscal 2024, twenty student teachers and interns benefited from this program as did approximately 500 elementary school students who were exposed to a Black male teacher. Leadership coaching is available to all college students who are in the BMT program. This training assists them with leading in a classroom. The Non-traditional pilot program assists a college student stay in school to study elementary education while providing them with an in-class job while going to school.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0HIGH SCHOOL - A summer academy for elementary students is held on Saturday mornings for nine weeks. The first three weeks are training for high school students interested in becoming educators. The following six weeks are actual classroom teaching experiences for these high school students to teach elementary school students lessons. BMT also sponsored a teen summit to provide high school students information on teaching as a career and steps to become a teacher.
