Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Black Men Teach (BMT) recruits, prepares, places, and retains Black male teachers in elementary schools by building a robust pathway to the teaching profession, beginning in high school and continuing to support men through college and into their teaching career. BMT began in 2018 based on research that told us that a diverse teacher corps improves student outcomes for all children, especially children of color. Black students in elementary school who have at least one Black male teacher are 29% less likely to drop out of school. Those who have two Black male teachers are 32% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education. Since its start in 2018, BMT has gone from a start-up, to serving 12 Black men in 2020, 42 in 2021 and 63 in 2022. To support our rapid ramp up in programming, our staffing and budgeted spend are ramping up. We are developing a coalition of schools, school districts, teacher training and scholarship programs, and community organizations to achieve this objective.

BMT has an Executive Committee which consists of the Board Chair and Vice Chair, and the Chairs of its standing committees. Unless otherwise provided by the directors, during intervals between meetings of the board of directors, the Executive Committee has the power to take any action that may be taken by the board of directors, other than the power to: remove or appoint directors, committee members or officers; amend or repeal the bylaws; amend or repeal any vote or action taken by the board of directors; or exercise any other power that the directors are prohibited by law from delegating. Any action taken by the Executive Committee is reported to the board of directors at its next meeting

The 990 draft was reviewed by our auditors CLA, reviewed by our Finance Committee and a draft was provided to our board members and discussed at a board meeting prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Annually, the conflict of interest policy is provided to directors and employees, and there is a process to ensure that each director and employee returns a signed copy and any conflicts notes are reviewed and resolved. This process is monitored by the chair of the board governance committee. Any potential conflicts of interest identified are brought to the full board for discussion and resolution.

BMT's only employee at June 30, 2021 was its executive director. He was hired on January 1, 2021 after an extensive search which included using a third party executive search firm. That firm provided guidance on comparable compensation for similar positions with non-profit organizations. For other positions, and as per board policy, the executive director provides the executive committee with position descriptions and salary recommendations. These salary recommendations use regularly updated compensation data provided by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. The last such update was in 2020. The executive committee approves all such salaries.

The Organization prepared the 990 for the year ended June 30, 2020 on the cash basis. The Organization changed to the accrual basis for the year ended June 30, 2021. The change from cash to accrual increased net assets at June 30, 2020 by $209,936 which was reflected on Form 990, Part XI, Line 8. The change consisted of a pledge receivable of $210,000, a prepaid expense of $2,936 and accounts payable of $3,000. The Organization filed Form 3114 on November 29, 2021.

Black Men Teach is organizied as a Minnesota nonprofit corporation and has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as exempt from federal income taxes under IRC Section 501(c)(3). The Organization is annual required to file a Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax (Form 99) with the IRS. In addition, the Organization is subject to income tax on net income that is derived from business activities that are unrelated to its exempt purpose. The Organization believes it is not subject to unrelated business income tax and has not filed an Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return (Form 990-T) with the IRS.

IRS990/Desc0Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP). Most teachers graduate school with student loan debt, and Black men have significantly more debt than their white counterparts. This burden often leads men to leave the profession. Designed to keep current Black male teachers in the classroom, SLRP pays off the principal amount of student debt held by practicing teachers over a five-year period. For tax year 2020 six men were directly supported by this program and 150 elementary school students benefited from them remaining in the classroom.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Black Men Teach's mission is to recruit, prepare, place, and retain Black male teachers in elementary schools. Research tells us that a diverse teacher corps improves student outcomes for all children, especially children of color. Black students in elementary school who have at least one Black male teacher are 29% less likely to drop out of school. Those who have two Black male teachers are 32% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education. To achieve its mission, Black Men Teach is building a robust pathway to the teaching profession beginning in high school and continuing to support men through college and into their teaching career. Black Men Teach serves as the advocate, coach, mentor and guide for Black men seeking to become elementary school educators. This work requires a coalition including elementary schools, school districts, teacher training programs, scholarship programs, and community organizations who work together to achieve this important community objective.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Student Teaching Stipend - Student teaching, required to earn a degree and become a licensed teacher, is a significant financial burden for students. Because this activity is full time, for a period of 12 to 16 weeks, it precludes the student from earning outside income from a full or part time job. Therefore, many students drop out of teaching at this late stage because of this burden. BMT assists its teaching candidates by providing a stipend during this part of their education. In tax year 2020 two student teachers benefited from this program as did 50 elementary school students who were exposed to a Black male teacher.

Additionally, these interns provide a seldom seen Black male role model as an educational leader to the school's students. In tax year 2020 two interns benefited from this program as did the 50 students in their classrooms. Due to Covid-19 and distance learning situations for both elementary schools and universities, we were unable to place the number of interns projected.
