Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to make mental health and related services available to underserved, marginalized, and/or disenfranchised people through organizational and individual capacity building. We are most notably dedicated to supporting services to people who have experienced discrimination and stigma and to those whose identities are particularly vulnerable to systems of oppression.

VALOR Violence And Loss Organizational Response Valor: great courage in the face of danger (English) Valor: value and/or bravery (Spanish) For any organization where people have experienced violence or sudden or traumatic loss, or for organizations or agencies located in urban neighborhoods where gun and/or other community violence occurs frequently, there is an increased probability that employees will experience violence, the death or injury of a client, or perhaps the death or injury of a colleague. The Wingspan Project's VALOR program is designed to provide support for individuals and organizations experiencing such violence and loss. Through the VALOR program, organizations can request one or more clinicians to arrive at an agency immediately after a traumatic event or loss. In addition, TWP can offer on-site psychotherapy and crisis intervention services for one or more days, providing individual or group intervention for employees. And for employees who might benefit from more extended support or who would like to receive support more confidentially, TWP can provide additional sessions for a pre-determined length of time, or linkages to clinicians through TWP network. TWP can also provide employee workshops that address general self-care, meditation, mindfulness, and vicarious trauma. Because we are often taught to avoid feeling symptoms of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout, the primary objective of our workshops is to change that mentality. What if we considered that compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma are natural indicators of being invested in our work? The driving principle of our self-care workshops is to create a strengths-based reframing of these concepts. We approach work around addressing compassion fatigue very relationally, since we believe that vicarious trauma's most insidious impact is on our relationships with others and our relationships with ourselves. In most instances, we incorporate some ideas about concrete skill-building, which we think is important to include as part of a self-care workshop series, though we find the effects of vicarious trauma are most powerfully healed through the kinds of work environments we create and the extent to which we feel connected to and supported by the people with whom we work. For these reasons, our workshops emphasize experiential activities and deepening connections. Consistent with these beliefs, we seldom provide one-time self-care workshops as we believe an agency/program can't adequately shift a belief system around self-care with a one-time training. Instead, we create a unique self-care plan with each organization or program interested in our services. This usually includes an initial conversation with agency-decision makers, a needs assessment with all involved staff, and a workshop series that can span anywhere from several workshops over 3-6 months, to a longer process of workshops coupled with individual employee coaching and support services.$32,925$32,135
The Wingspan Project is partnering with Live Oak, Inc. to offer the Valuing Difference Awards. Our collaboration builds on the aligned beliefs and common history shared by our two organizations. The key elements of our beliefs that drive this program are: The Wingspan Project Making mental health and related services available to underserved, marginalized, and/or disenfranchised people through organizational and individual capacity building Dedicated to supporting services to people who have experienced discrimination and stigma and to those whose identities are particularly vulnerable to systems of oppression. Committed to helping individuals and organizations optimize services to underrepresented and underserved communities Live Oak Believes that In responding to systems of marginalization, people and communities often cope in ways that magnify feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and disconnection Recognizes the consequences of privilege, oppression, discrimination and stigma Affirms the value of difference, emphasizing the extent to which growth and connection is enhanced more from our differences than from our similarities Provides clients with opportunities to reduce the disintegrating effects of power and privilege to promote self- actualization and integration. Graduate Student Award Each award will be no less than $500/person but no more than $1000/person, with a total of $2,500 in possible awards each year. Community Activism and Achievement Award Each award will be no less than $500/person but no more than $1000/person, with a total of $2,500 in possible awards each year.$5,000$10,000
Young Professionals Network The Young Professionals Network (YPN) supports the growth and development of early career individuals committed to working with underserved and/or underrepresented people and communities. YPN connects these early career individuals with more seasoned professionals who are committed to providing mentorship and consultation on at least a monthly basis. In addition to the monthly individual consultation meetings, YPN also provides periodic training and continuing education opportunities for early career professionals and their mentors with a focus on increasing capacity to provide services to historically marginalized groups. We're excited to announce that we are now looking for 10 professionals with at least 10 years post-graduate experience to serve as mentors for our next group of 10 young professionals. If you are interested in participating as either a mentor or as a young professional, please send your resume to Amanda Senior, LCPC. Please submit your materials no later than November 30, 2020. The next cohort is scheduled to launch in January 2021.$0$855
Access for All The Access for All (AfA) program provides and subsidizes direct mental health services to individuals, families, and organizations who may not be able to access such services due to financial and/or logistical constraints. Individuals and/or families may submit an application to TWP for services, specifying whether they have already identified a therapist or organization from whom they would like to receive services or if they would like assistance through TWP to identify potential therapists. Organizations may apply to the program in order to provide free, low-cost, and/or subsidized mental health services to marginalized and/or disenfranchised individuals through traditional agency-based psychotherapy or through innovative programming offered in client homes or schools.$0$0
Franklin's Fund Franklin's Fund (FF) supports people with mental health needs and/or physical disabilities and their relationships with their animals/pets. Recognizing the value of the animal-human relationship in enhancing and maintaining mental health, FF provides financial and other resources to people who otherwise would not be able to maintain their relationships with their animal family members. People who benefit from Franklin's Fund include older or infirm people who require some kind of financial or in-kind resources for their animals to remain in their care. Franklin's Fund also provides financial or in-kind resources to people without the ability to provide medical or other care to older or special needs animals with the goal of maintaining quality of life for both animal and human.$0$0
