Mission

Urg sponsored a redistricting reform ballot initiative that was enacted by utah voters in the 2018 general election and modified by the utah legislature in 2020. Urg's current focus is implementation of these reforms, including legislative and legal defense of the law and educating utahns on their central role in the reformed redistrcting process.

UTAHNS FOR RESPONSIVE GOVERNMENT (DBA BETTER BOUNDARIES)WAS FORMED TO SPONSOR A REDISTRICTING REFORM BALLOT INITIATIVE, THE UTAH INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING COMMISSION AND STANDARDS ACT (PROPOSITION 4), THAT WAS ENACTED BY UTAH VOTERS IN THE 2018 GENERAL ELECTION. THE ACT MODIFIES UTAH'S REDISTRICTING SYSTEM BY ESTABLISHING AN INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING COMMISSION AND PRESCRIBING REDISTRICTING STANDARDS AS WELL AS TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY REQUIREMENTS. THIS IMPROVED REDISTRICTING SYSTEM PROHIBITS THE COMMISSION FROM ENGAGING IN UNDUE PARTISAN AND INCUMBENT GERRYMANDERING,MAKES THE REDISTRICTING PROCESS MORE TRANSPARENT, INCREASES VOTER PARTICIPATION,AND MAKES UTAH'S ELECTED OFFICIALS MORE RESPONSIVE AND ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PEOPLE WHO ELECT THEM. IN 2020, UTAHNS FOR RESPONSIVE GOVERNMENT NEGOTIATED WITH THE LEGISLATURE TO ENSURE THAT THESE ENACTED REFORMS ARE IMPLEMENTED, INCLUDING LEGISLATIVE AND LEGAL DEFENSE OF THE LAW AND EDUCATING UTAH VOTERS ON THE BENEFITS OF THE ACT AND THE PUBLIC'S CENTAL ROLE IN THE REFORMED REDISTRICTING PROCESS.
