Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

All Trustees, Directors, Officers, and Key Employees are required to sign a Conflict of Interest policy. It is the policy of the Board that the existence of any interests that give rise to conflict be disclosed on a timely basis and always before any transaction is consummated. It shall be the continuing responsibility of the Board, officers, and management employees to scrutinize their transactions and outside business interests and relationships for potential conflicts and to immediately make such disclosures. Board member disclosures should be made to a Board officer and staff disclosures should be made to the chief executive. The Board shall determine whether a conflict exists and is material, and in the presence of an existing material conflict, whether the contemplated transaction may be authorized as just, fair, and reasonable to Revive & Restore. The decision of the Board on these matters will rest in their sole discretion, and their concern must be the welfare of Revive & Restore and the advancement of its purpose.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services

In 2018, Revive & Restore launched a Catalyst Science Fund in order to catalyze the creation of impactful innovations in conservation. Rapid advances in biotechnology have the potential to benefit conservation practice, yet the conservation community has been slow to adopt these new tools. Since our founding in 2012, Revive & Restore has come to an important realization that a key barrier to the adoption of genomic solutions by the conservation community is the lack of success stories. Given that successful projects require advancing the science and that the barrier to scientific advancement is often funding, this new fund will support early-stage research in transformative bio-science and proof-of-concept projects that can be applied towards high-value, high-impact conservation challenges.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: GENETIC RESCUE TOOLKIT: Revive & Restore advances the incorporation of genetic tools into standard conservation practice by bringing together academic and commercial organizations and the conservation practitioners working in the field. Revive & Restore has three distinct roles: as a convener, as a science coordinator, and as a funder advancing the necessary science to build a new conservation toolkit for the twenty-first century. Our projects aim to demonstrate the impact biotechnology can have on endangered species to enhance genetic diversity, to build disease resistance, and to facilitate adaptation to a changing climate. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: OCEAN GENOMICS HORIZON SCAN: Revive & Restore conducted a landscape assessment of the threats to marine ecosystems and of the opportunities for mitigating threats to ocean health with genomic and biotech tools. This report highlights how genomic insight and biotechnologies might complement and, in some cases, transform marine conservation strategies. Revive & Restore interviewed close to 100 marine biologists, conservationists, and technologists who identified ways that rapid advances in genomics and biotech could be applied to their work. Revive & Restore then developed eight project proposals that address a currently intractable marine conservation challenge by applying new genomic and biotech tools. Each proposal represents an opportunity where early investments can help build transformative change. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: CATALYST SCIENCE FUND: Revive & Restore has identified the need to catalyze innovative science-based solutions for seemingly intractable conservation challenges by leveraging and adapting powerful genomic and biotechnology tools. This Catalyst Science Fund provides grants to projects developing new conservation-focused biotechnologies or creating new proof-of-concept applications of advancements from the agricultural or human medicine sectors. The goal of these grants is catalytic and transformative science that targets new pathways and platforms for near-term conservations solutions. In 2018, the first grant from the fund was awarded to an academic research team that is investigating the genomic stress trigger that may cause corals to bleach as a result of warming ocean conditions. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: WOOLLY MAMMOTH: The Church lab at Harvard Medical School has identified the genes for cold-adapted traits in woolly mammoth genomes and transferred those genes into the genomes of living Asian elephant cells in the lab. This research may enable the creation of living elephants capable of taking up their old ecological role in the Arctic ecosystem. This project has also helped identify immediate benefits to conservation; the lab is also developing a cure for the elephant herpes virus, which impacts as many as a quarter of all young Asian Elephants. To get from the lab work to thriving herds of woolly mammoths will take many steps and many years. Revive & Restore is managing those steps, assembling the many specialistsfrom veterinarians to ecologistsneeded to eventually complete the project.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0In 2018, Revive & Restore launched a Catalyst Science Fund in order to catalyze the creation of impactful innovations in conservation.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: GENETIC RESCUE TOOLKIT: Revive & Restore advances the incorporation of genetic tools into standard conservation practice by bringing together academic and commercial organizations and the conservation practitioners working in the field.
