Performing arts programs for individuals w/ disabilities

ENSEMBLES: Through the course of 10 weekly rehearsals, actors collaborate with a team of teaching artists and volunteer facilitators to create a public performance. In fall 2019, ensembles devised two stage productions in partnership with The Theatre School at DePaul University. A.B.L.E.'s ensembles were 3 weeks into rehearsals for their spring projects when the COVID19 pandemic forced us to reimagine how we work. We shifted to offer virtual sessions via Zoom. Ensembles collaborated on two innovative digital projects and shared their work in a series of livestreams. PROGRAM METRICS: Total number of ensembles = 6; Total rehearsals = 83; Total enrolment = 62 (30 unique); In person performances = 2; Virtual performances = 6; Total audience = 318 in person; 8000+ online views$0$32,842
OTHER: This line includes expenses that are shared across all programs such as background checks for teaching artists and volunteers, reusable classroom materials, props and costumes, professional development sessions, and program staffing. Additionally, in the wake of COVID 19, this year, we launched A.B.L.E. At Home which featured a video series of theatre games and activities, and several productions from A.B.L.E.'s archive, all available to stream free of charge.$0$13,670
WORKSHOPS: Specialized sessions led by ABLE teaching artists and/or guest artists to introduce actors with I/DD to specialized performance techniques. In addition to curricula developed and led by A.B.L.E. teaching artists, A.B.L.E. also partners with guest artists for workshops and field trip opportunities to learn more about the performing arts world. For the 3rd year in a row, A.B.L.E. welcomed guest artists from the internationally acclaimed physical theatre company, Frantic Assembly to lead workshops for our ensemble and teaching team. A.B.L.E. also hosted 5 Field Trips to professional productions including an advanced screening of The Peanut Butter Falcon and backstage tour of The Goodman Theatre. OUTREACH: ABLE shares our methodology by providing one-time workshops and longer residencies for schools and community organizations that serve individuals with I/DD. We are able to share best practices for inclusive arts, and widen our reach. Travel is often a barrier for those with disabilities, so by bringing our work to them, we ensure more people have access to creative and social opportunities. This year, A.B.L.E. forged a new outreach partnership with Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association. We shared A.B.L.E.'s methodology and mission with other educators and performers at Northwestern University's Inclusive Theatre Festival and the MidAmerica Theatre Conference, and through accessibility consulting for The House Theatre.
