Activity 2

Reading of literature. We held our annual "the big read" program with "the maltese falcon" in partnership with the national endowment of the arts. Approximately 800 books were distributed to constituents to participate, as well as a dozen movie/book/discussion kits. The fourth red dirt book festival was held in november 2009. This two-day event was attended by more than 500 participants with more than 50 author presenters. It was funded primarily through grants and donations with the largest grant coming from the oklahoma humanities council.

Activity 3

Early literacy and reading readiness. The summer reading program reaches readers across the system. More than 27,000 children and teens participated in more than 360 programs. We offered hundreds of children's story times and circulated more than 800,000 books and materials for young children and families. The national endowment for the humanities' "prime time" family reading program, a family literacy program targeting low-income and/or bilingual families at risk for below-average literacy levels, reached nearly 100 families. We received an "amo leer" (i love to read) collection of 700 children's spanish and bilingual books from the robert & ruby priddy charitable trust designed to improve literacy and english language literacy for native spanish speakers. Continuation of "growing like a read" program from the inasmuch foundation for more than 1,400 preschool children, their parents and child care providers.
