Activity 2

COMMUNITY SERVICE - GV Guatemalan and US students built three new school rooms, planted over 4,000 trees and volunteered over 2,800 hours in Hermano Pedro Hospital in Guatemala. Collectively, students contributed to conservation efforts in seven Seattle parks, gained environmental awareness and stewardship skils, participated in hands-on learning during eight visits to Local Roots organic farm, and participated in five social justice peer led workshops. Students collected over 2,000 pounds of essential medical and school supplies for hospitals and schools in Guatemala. Participants raised $20,750 through philanthropic fundraising which included selling coffee from Guatemalan farmers, while learning the process of coffee making and international trade.

Activity 3

ADVANCED LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT - 40 U.S. Youth Board students and 8 Guatemalan youth leaders gained advanced leadership, facilitation and organization skills. They co-facilitated workshops and seminars throughout the school year on culture, environmental and social justice issues for first year participants. The Pro Justice Team facilitated five workshops. Over 35 interns contributed to program services and operations while learning various skills in a non-profit environment. Youth Board students created new programs, including the Junior Leader Program enabling Youth Board to participate in yet another important aspect of our organization: co-facilitate cultural immersion experiences abroad. We successfully piloted a capacity building and professional training program bringing one Guatemalan youth to the USA on a J-1 VISA through Earthcorps and GV.
