| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Fort Sanders Foundation's distributions to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in 2019 primarily funded two programs. Just over $234,000 was distributed for equipment and training to implement a hospital-wide safe patient handling and mobility program. Approximately $154,000 was directed to Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center programs and services, including: renovation and modernization of the Center's independent living apartment which provides a home-like space within the hospital for patients and caregivers to test their skills before discharge to their homes; a zero gravity mobile arm support system to facilitate physical therapy for patients with weakened shoulder and elbow function; the annual operating and equipment expenses of the Innovative Recreation Cooperative which provides adaptive sports and recreation opportunities throughout the community; therapist continuing education; and several patient support groups. An additional approximately $11,000 was distributed to purchase a new endoscopy system for the Laser Center which treats esophageal cancers and other throat conditions. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | In late 2018, the Fort Sanders Foundation Board of Directors approved funding for a new partnership between Covenant HomeCare and Knoxville Area Rescue Mission (KARM) to reduce frequent hospitalizations among the homeless community. In 2019, $79,345 was distributed to support that project which provides onsite medical care, clinic facilities, medication management and case management at the KARM shelter. In the last year, that program has served 39 patients, prevented 224 inpatient care days, and saved more than $350,000 in hospitalization costs which would have gone unreimbursed. Additionally, that group of patients has had a 21% reduction in emergency room visits and a 35% reduction in length of stay when hospitalization is required. As a result, the patients at KARM are leading healthier lives. In the spring of last year Covenant Health transitioned the Hope Center, a no-cost assistance program for the HIV community, to another community provider who was better suited to provide these services as a part of their robust continuum of care for affected individuals, their families and caregivers. Distributions to support the operations of Hope Center during the first part of 2019 and the transition of the program to another community not-for-profit agency totaled $63,202.Covenant Hospice's annual Katerpillar Kids Camp continued to be funded by the Foundation in 2019. Approximately $32,500 was distributed to support this free grief camp for children who have experienced the death of a loved one. At the fall weekend camp, 66 children were served by HomeCare and Hospice staff along with 32 volunteers. Two additional day camps in the spring served approximately 35 campers each, along with providing support group options for their parents/guardians.Another $16,500 was distributed to support the needs of indigent HomeCare/Hospice patients, underwrite professional education opportunities for staff, fund membership in the National Hospice and Palliative Care organization, provide patient education materials, fund grief counseling services, and conduct the annual memorial service for families of deceased Hospice patients. |

Patients are vetted both clinically and financially by Center staff before being selected for scholarship-funded care. Distributions of $133,808 in 2019 supported 38 requests for patients who were provided with inpatient and outpatient care, as well as durable medical equipment needs. The Foundation receives grant funds annually from the Will Rogers Institute to support pulmonary rehabilitation across Covenant Health. A significant portion of that funding is distributed for scholarships to fund outpatient pulmonary rehab for patients without insurance coverage or the ability to pay. In 2019, distributions of $47,358 supported 246 patients at Roane, Parkwest, Methodist, LeConte, Loudoun, and Fort Sanders Regional outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation clinics.Outpatient cardiac rehabilitation patients with no insurance coverage or ability to pay are provided care through distributions from the Foundation's Lewis S. Howard Memorial Fund. Twenty-seven patient requests for care at the Parkwest and Fort Sanders Regional outpatient cardiac rehabilitation clinics received $5,520 in assistance in 2019. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 0 | Each year funds are contributed, primarily through Covenant Health's annual WeCare Employee Giving Campaign, to assist employees and patients in times of crisis. Support includes assistance with housing, transportation, food, clothing, medicines/medical supplies, utilities, childcare, and unexpected funeral expenses. In 2019, $180,184 was distributed to assist 4,637 individuals at Covenant parent company (78), Cumberland Medical Center (24), Claiborne Medical Center (10), LeConte Medical Center (29), Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center (2,848), Fort Loudoun Medical Center (14), Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System (46), Parkwest Medical Center (158), Peninsula (71), Roane Medical Center (22), Thompson Cancer Survival Center (856), Methodist Medical Center (306), and Covenant HomeCare/Hospice (175).The Foundation supports a variety of other patient care programs throughout Covenant Health. The most significant distributions in 2019, which were directed to Peninsula, Fellowship Center, and Parkwest Medical Center, are detailed below:In 2019, funds raised through the annual Artsclamation! fine art sale and other donations supported three primary areas of behavioral health care at Peninsula. Almost $73,000 provided discharge medications to patients who need a supply of prescriptions when they leave the hospital to maintain their health until they are set up on TennCare or other payer sources for ongoing maintenance medications. Emergency assistance of approximately $14,700 to help with housing, transportation, food, and other basic necessities was provided to 57 clients in crisis. Transportation can be a significant barrier to accessing care for behavioral health patients. An additional $40,625 was distributed to purchase a new 15-passenger van to transport outpatients to therapy sessions at Peninsula's outpatient treatment centers, and $6,660 in direct assistance was distributed via gift cards to patients/caregivers for purchasing gasoline. The Fellowship Center, an outpatient lodging facility supported entirely by contributions, offers free lodging for families coping with serious illnesses and includes fourteen furnished apartments, a community family room, stocked pantry, and laundry facilities. Thompson Cancer Survival Center patients and their families who live more than 30 miles from Knoxville have priority use of Fellowship Center apartments. As space permits, the Center also welcomes outpatients from Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center and referrals from area health care facilities. In 2019, $79,461 in distributions supported the operational and capital costs of the Center. Additionally, $1,636 in gifts-in-kind were received and distributed to the Center, primarily pantry and household items for use by guests. The Center hosted 463 guests from nineteen states and Australia in 2019 providing a total of 3,871 nights of free lodging. Distributions to Parkwest Medical Center in 2019 totaled $47,200. Over $27,000 supported clinical continuing education and advanced certifications for nurses and other medical professionals. Almost $20,000 was distributed to the obstetrics and women's services department to provide safe sleep swaddle blankets for newborns, a Cuddle Cot for use in situations of fetal demise to allow grieving parents and family members more time with their infant, and a nitrous oxide system to provide alternative pain management to mothers during labor and delivery. |
