Mission and Program Overview

Mission

People who have just been released from prison are typically stigmatized, overlooked, and pigeonholed by society. When they walk into project return, they discover that here they are valued, heard, and encouraged. While reduction of incarceration and other criminal justice reform continues to elude the u.s., project return serves as part of the solution. Project return is solely dedicated to the successful new beginnings of people returning to our community after incarceration. Now in its 44th year of service to tennessee, project return provides reentry assistance, including workforce development, to hundreds of men and women each year. We place employment at the core of our work, because it is the best predictor of a successful future for the people we serve, and all of our program services and business development are woven together to ensure maximal employment opportunity. The mission of project return is to provide services and connect people with resources needed to return succes

Major Activities

Activity 2
Mentoring program: project return's mentoring program, "coaching for life", enacts what research as well as common wisdom tell us, which is that a person coming out of prison benefits greatly from having a mentor - another person from the community who knows the ex-offender, has his/her interests at heart, maintains a supportive relationship, and provides encouragement along the way. Prison inmates whose release is imminent are able to apply to become a part of the mentoring program. Project return trains mentors and pairs them with mentees, then monitors and supports the mentoring relationships on an ongoing basis. The ex-offender derives invaluable support, while the mentor has the opportunity to have a profound impact in another person's life. Grant revenue received for this program service was $90,134.
Activity 3
Ged/adult literacy program: because a high percentage of ex-offenders struggle with educational and learning deficits, project returns ged/adult literacy program offers learner-focused instruction tailed to meet the individual needs and goals of participants. Through a formal partnership with the nashville adult literacy council, and in collaboration with the state board of probation and parole, project return offers ex-offenders the opportunity to improve their skills and resume educational attainment. Classes are taught by teachers who are focused on increasing reading skills and providing preparation for the ged. Grant revenue received for this program service was $43,728.
