Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

Saint paul's is a proud independent school nestled in a private neighborhood on 12 acres, in the heart of clearwater, florida, where the sun shines 240 days a year. - we are passionate about the power and importance of a k-8 education, and about protecting the sanctity of childhood. - we are dedicated to expanding our knowledge of innovative teaching and learning practices, and to attracting the most talented faculty, both nationally and internationally. - we are devoted to supporting the academic growth of our students, and to forming deep and lasting partnerships with our families. Our 375 students, spanning eight weeks to eighth grade, are a microcosm of the world around us. In line with our episcopal values, our community welcomes and celebrates families with a range of ethnicities and religions. - we are intentional about building an inclusive community, with over 20% of our students from diverse backgrounds, speaking 12 different languages, and representing 44 different countries. - we are equally proud to have 27 legacy families enrolled whose commitment to saint paul's may span three generations. Our efforts yield results. Graduates of saint paul's are accepted into the high schools and colleges of their choice, poised to excel in the classroom, on the field, and on the stage. Our alumni network is vast with our 50-year history, and includes industry-leaders, community-leaders, and thought-leaders.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF COVID-19 IMPACT:

Saint paul's went to virtual learning in march 2020 until the end of the school year for our school-age students. Our infants through toddlers returned in may of 2020 with enhanced protocols. Some of the enhancements for the fall of 2020 developed to keep the school healthy and open by reducing possible exposure to covid-19. We capitalized on our small class sizes, open-air campus, multiple outdoor learning and dining spaces, exterior doors on most of our classrooms, many advanced technologies, and access to a full-time registered nurse. - enhanced campus spaces (hand-sanitizing stations, increased air filter replacements, plexiglass) - enhanced classroom spaces (social distancing within classrooms, outdoor spaces for classrooms, reduced shared materials) - enhanced personal conduct (wellness checks, masks/buffs purchased, handwashing) - enhanced daily schedule (delivered pre-packaged catered lunches, outer doors and revised carlines) - enhanced technologies (continue zoom, google suites, provided at home learning, digital books) - enhanced parent-school partnership (reduced visitors and parents on campus)

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The finance committee is responsible for selection of the independent accountant and oversight of the financial statement audit. The audit process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The school's endowment consists of several individual funds established for a variety of purposes. Its endowment includes both donor-restricted funds and funds designated by the board of trustees to function as endowments. The school manages a board-designated endowment, whose use is limited by the board of trustees as to principal and income. In october, 2005 the board of trustees passed a resolution specifying that any unrestricted legacy campaign donations be allocated as follows: 55% to the board-designated general endowment and the remaining 45% to the faculty endowment. Of the portion allocated to the board-designated endowment, 90% will be allocated to the building fund (a sub-account of the board-designated endowment for re-payment of debt service) with the residual 10% allocated to the general fund of the board-designated endowment for investment. An 85% vote of the entire membership of the board of trustees shall be required to authorize a distribution or loan from the principal of the endowment fund. Effective june 2, 2018, the school's board of trustees approved a resolution to allow use of the board-designated endowment fund for general operating needs and to meet current obligations (should such need arise). As such, the school considers the balance of investments comprising the board-designated endowment to represent a current asset for financial reporting purposes. In november 2006, the school established the faculty endowment for the purpose of receiving and investing contributions to enhance the school's ability to provide lecturers or faculty of the highest quality and reputation and to provide funds for scholar stipends in various scholastic disciplines. Distributions from the funds are limited to certain defined maximums. The faculty endowment is to continue as long as its purpose can be serviced by its continuation and may otherwise be terminated or used for other purposes only upon a catastrophic occurrence that jeopardizes the existence of the school, as reasonably determined by an 85% majority vote of the trustees.

PART X, LINE 2:

The school is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and has been determined not to be a private foundation. The school has adopted the provisions of asc topic 740 relating to accounting for uncertainty in income taxes. The school does not believe it has any material income tax exposure relating to uncertain tax positions. The school's income tax filings for periods after the fiscal year ended june 30, 2016 remain subject to examination.
