Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The school's endowment consists of several individual funds established for a variety of purposes. Its endowment includes both donor-restricted funds and funds designated by the board of trustees to function as endowments. The school manages a board-designated endowment, whose use is limited by the board of trustees as to principal and income. In october, 2005 the board of trustees passed a resolution specifying that any unrestricted legacy campaign donations be allocated as follows: 55% to the board-designated general endowment 45% to the faculty endowment of the portion allocated to the board-designated endowment, 90% will be allocated to the building fund (a sub-account of the board-designated endowment for re-payment of debt service) with the residual 10% allocated to the general fund of the board-designated endowment for investment. An 85% vote of the entire membership of the board of trustees shall be required to authorize a distribution or loan from the principal of the endowment fund. The school established the faculty endowment for the purpose of receiving and investing contributions to enhance the school's ability to provide lecturers or faculty of the highest quality and reputation and to provide funds for scholar stipends in various scholastic disciplines. Distributions from the funds are limited to certain defined maximums. The faculty endowment is to continue as long as its purpose can be serviced by its continuation and may otherwise be terminated or used for other purposes only upon a catastrophic occurrence that jeopardizes the existence of the school, as reasonably determined by an 85% majority vote of the trustees.

IRS990/Desc0AS AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN THE EPISCOPAL TRADITION, SAINT PAUL'S SCHOOL IS PROUD TO PROVIDE A DYNAMIC COMMUNITY OF LEARNING FOR CHILDREN IN PRE-KINDERGARTEN 3 THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE. WITH AN EMPHASIS ON VALUES AND CHARACTER, SAINT PAUL'S CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. THE SCHOOL IS COMPRISED OF THREE DIVISIONS: EARLY CHILDHOOD, LOWER SCHOOL, AND MIDDLE SCHOOL. WHILE EACH DIVISION HAS ITS OWN IDENTITY, ALL BENEFIT FROM BEING PART OF A LARGER SCHOOL COMMUNITY. TOGETHER, THEY REPRESENT THE BEGINNING OF A LIFELONG JOURNEY OF LEARNING FOR SAINT PAUL'S STUDENTS.SEE CONTINUATION ON SCHEDULE OEARLY CHILDHOOD - (PREKINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIRST GRADE) THE EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM BEGINS THE INTEGRATED LEARNING PROCESS WITH HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES THAT ENGAGE THE CHILD'S NATURAL CURIOSITY. THE EMPHASIS IS ON THE TOTAL CHILD: SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND ACADEMIC. THE CURRICULUM PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL GROWTH THROUGH ACTIVITIES THAT ARE CHALLENGING AND FUN. CLASSROOMS ARE DESIGNED TO PROMOTE DISCOVERY, INDEPENDENCE, CREATIVITY, AND RESPONSIBILITY, WITH CENTERS FOR HOUSEKEEPING, BLOCK PLAY ART, LIBRARY, AND MANIPULATIVE USED IN PRE-MATH AND PRE-READING READINESS. CHILDREN GAIN A SENSE OF SECURITY AND CONFIDENCE THROUGH THE SHARING OF EXPERIENCES, MUSIC, DRAMATIC PLAY, LITERATURE, ARTS AND CRAFTS, FREE PLAY, AND READINESS ACTIVITIES. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES A NURTURING ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH EACH CHILD CAN MATURE AND GROW. THE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM PROVIDES A SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM THE PLAY-AS-LEARNING AND EXPERIMENTAL ATMOSPHERE TO THE MORE TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC CLIMATE OF FIRST GRADE.LOWER SCHOOL (GRADES 2 THROUGH 5) - THE LOWER SCHOOL EXPERIENCE PROVIDES AN EXCEPTIONALLY STRONG FOUNDATION FOR ITS STUDENTS IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF ENCOURAGEMENT, CHALLENGE, CREATIVITY, AND DISCIPLINE. THE CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO EXPAND AND CHALLENGE YOUNG MINDS. READING, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND SOCIAL STUDIES FORM THE CORE OF THE CURRICULUM, COMPLEMENTED WITH CLASSES IN SPANISH, COMPUTER SKILLS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, MUSIC AND ART. SAINT PAUL'S LOWER SCHOOL DEVELOPS STUDENTS WHO ARE EAGER TO LEARN, CERTAIN OF THEIR ABILITIES, AND RESPECTFUL OF THEIR CLASSMATES AND TEACHERS.MIDDLE SCHOOL (GRADES 6 THROUGH 8) - IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, STUDENTS UTILIZE THE STUDY AND ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS LEARNED IN LOWER SCHOOL IN NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGING CURRICULUM. ADVANCED CLASSES IN LANGUAGE ARTS, MATHEMATICS, SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, AND FRENCH OR SPANISH ARE SUPPLEMENTED BY CLASSES IN HEALTH AND INFORMED DECISION MAKING, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ART, TECHNOLOGY, AND MUSIC. TEACHERS EMPHASIZE CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING, STUDY SKILLS, HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES, AND COOPERATIVE PROJECTS. AS PART OF THE COLLEGE PREPARATORY MISSION, SEMESTER EXAMS ARE GIVEN IN WINTER AND SPRING. STANDARDIZED TESTS ARE ADMINISTERED AND USED TO MEASURE SCHOLASTIC GROWTH. THE GOAL OF MIDDLE SCHOOL IS TO FOSTER SCHOLASTIC ATTITUDES THAT BUILD DISCIPLINE AND RESPONSIBILITY WHILE ENCOURAGING CURIOSITY AND RESPECTING THE INDIVIDUALITY OF EACH CHILD. EACH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT IS ASSIGNED TO A SMALL ADVISORY GROUP LED BY A FACULTY MEMBER OR ADMINISTRATOR. GROUPS MEET INFORMALLY EACH WEEK TO DISCUSS A VARIETY OF ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL ISSUES, ADVISORS THEN COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS AND PARENTS TO KEEP THEM INFORMED ABOUT EACH STUDENT'S PROGRESS.
