Saint paul's school is an independent day school offering a comprehensive educational program to students from preschool through eighth grade. The curriculum offers an opportunity for each child to find personal challenge and a sense of accomplishment. Teachers create a safe learning environment, fostering a love of learning in their students. Educating the whole child takes commitment, resources, and a respect for the abilities of each individual. Saint paul's school sets a course for success for each student. That success is the culmination of an integrated approach to learning, one that instills values and a sense of responsibility for one's own future. Our students go on to the best programs in the area, and they are well-prepared to meet the challenges that await them beyond high school.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The finance committee is responsible for oversight of the financial statement audit. The audit process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The school's endowment consists of several individual funds established for a variety of purposes. Its endowment includes both donor-restricted funds and funds designated by the board of trustees to function as endowments. The school manages a board-designated endowment, whose use is limited by the board of trustees as to principal and income. In october, 2005 the board of trustees passed a resolution specifying that any unrestricted legacy campaign donations be allocated as follows: 55% to the board-designated general endowment and the remaining 45% to the faculty endowment. Of the portion allocated to the board-designated endowment, 90% will be allocated to the building fund (a sub-account of the board-designated endowment for re-payment of debt service) with the residual 10% allocated to the general fund of the board-designated endowment for investment. An 85% vote of the entire membership of the board of trustees shall be required to authorize a distribution or loan from the principal of the endowment fund. Effective june 2, 2018, the school's board of trustees approved a resolution to allow use of the board-designated endowment fund for general operating needs and to meet current obligations (should such need arise). As such, the school considers the balance of investments comprising the board-designated endowment to represent a current asset for financial reporting purposes. The school established the faculty endowment for the purpose of receiving and investing contributions to enhance the school's ability to provide lecturers or faculty of the highest quality and reputation and to provide funds for scholar stipends in various scholastic disciplines. Distributions from the funds are limited to certain defined maximums. The faculty endowment is to continue as long as its purpose can be serviced by its continuation and may otherwise be terminated or used for other purposes only upon a catastrophic occurrence that jeopardizes the existence of the school, as reasonably determined by an 85% majority vote of the trustees.

PART X, LINE 2:

The school is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and has been determined not to be a private foundation. The school has adopted the provisions of asc topic 740 relating to "accounting for uncertainty in income taxes." the school does not believe it has any material income tax exposure relating to uncertain tax positions. The school's income tax filings for periods after the fiscal year ended june 30, 2015 remain subject to examination.

IRS990/Desc0SAINT PAUL'S - CLEARWATER'S INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING A SAFE AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT WHERE OUR STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO THINK CREATIVELY, TO REFLECT CRITICALLY, TO DESIGN COLLABORATIVELY, AND TO LEAD CONFIDENTLY. CALCULATED RISK-TAKING IS PRACTICED AND FAILURE IS VIEWED AS LEARNING RESILIENCE. THIS SENTIMENT IS INCAPSULATED IN OUR VISION STATEMENT, "WE COMMIT TO OUR STUDENTS SO THEY WILL ACT JOYOUSLY UPON THEIR PASSIONS AND COURAGEOUSLY SEIZE ADVENTURES AND OPPORTUNITIES WE CANNOT FORESEE." SEE CONTINUATION ON SCHEDULE OOUR BEAUTIFUL TWELVE-ACRE, WATERFRONT CAMPUS IS A SECOND HOME TO 360 STUDENTS, RANGING FROM 8 WEEKS TO 8TH GRADE. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR EPISCOPAL ROOTS THAT HAVE HELPED US DEVELOP A COHESIVE, INCLUSIVE SENSE OF COMMUNITY THAT WELCOMES FAMILIES FROM ALL RELIGIOUS, RACIAL, ECONOMIC, AND GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUNDS. CURRENTLY, WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO SPEAK 13 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES; 20% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE STUDENTS OF COLOR AS DEFINED BY NAIS. AS A COMMUNITY, WE ARE DRAWN TOGETHER FOR A COMMON GOAL; TO EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN IN AN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT THAT LIVES ITS MISSION, "TO CULTIVATE TOMORROW'S LEADERS AND INNOVATORS IN AN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT THAT ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO DISCOVER THEIR UNIQUE IDENTITIES, EXPLORE THEIR PASSIONS AND DEVELOP A JOYFUL, INQUISITIVE APPROACH TO LEARNING AND LIFE."OVER THE LAST 51 YEARS, WE HAVE REMAINED MISSION-DRIVEN THROUGH OUR COMMITMENT TO RECRUITING TEACHERS NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY, WHO ARE TALENTED AND PASSIONATE; AND TO DEVELOPING PROGRESSIVE SIGNATURE PROGRAMS, PROJECTS, AND EXPERIENCES OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. IN ADDITION TO ROBOTICS, 3-D PRINTING, ACTING, PUBLIC SPEAKING, KAYAKING, PROTOTYPING, AND MARINE BIOLOGY, WE HAVE RECENTLY ADDED SCUBA DIVING, INTERNATIONAL TRIPS, OUTWARD BOUND EXPERIENCES, ARCHERY, PADDLE BOARDING, SAILING, AND MANDARIN CHINESE.THIS PROGRAMMING IS SUPPORTED THROUGH CONTINUAL CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS THAT ARE STRATEGIC IN THEIR DESIGN. WE HAVE INVESTED SIGNIFICANT FUNDING TO PROVIDE THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY, CAMPUS SECURITY, AN MIT-APPROVED FABRICATION LAB, AND A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART WHITE BOX THEATER THAT OPENED IN NOVEMBER, 2018.
