Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Thompson Cancer Survival Center Foundation provides consistent charitable support to Thompson Cancer Survival Center to ensure accessible cancer treatment programs for all people throughout the region regardless of their ability to pay.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Cancer Outreach Services. See Schedule O.Expenses $365,769, including Grants of $365,769.In 2012, TCSC Outreach Services traveled to 174 sites throughout the 18-county service area, providing cancer screenings and education. Accomplishments include: * Performed 2,417 mammograms: 1,161 at no charge to the poor and indigent and 1,256 at reduced cost to the under- or uninsured, including 16 cases in which cancer was detected. * Made available the funding which enabled 85 women to receive free pap smears in conjunction with Rural Medical Services (Cocke and Hamblen Counties) and the Department of Family Practice at East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine. * Completed "Sun Sense," a youth sun safety program, in which sunscreen and sun safety educational materials were given to over 800 individuals in Blount, Loudon, Sevier, Roane, and Hamblen Counties. * Coordinated "Pink Ribbon Sunday," an annual breast health and awareness program, in October. Trained and supplied 62 volunteers with educational and awareness materials, who in-turn, held programs throughout 40 predominantly African-American churches in Knox and surrounding counties that reached an estimated 12,000 individuals with cancer screening information. * Participated in numerous health fairs throughout the 18-county service area and made frequent community, school, and professional presentations. Presented a continuing education class on mammography for 66 radiology technologists in the region. * Sponsored a colon cancer awareness initiative. A colon cancer education program, featuring Bill Williams, was conducted in Corryton. Public service announcements were provided (in partnership with WBIR-TV) throughout July and August that resulted in the distribution of 551 colon cancer educational packets in connection with the PSA campaign and efforts at the Women Today expo. * Facilitated two cancer support groups - young breast cancer survivors and African-American breast cancer survivors. The two groups, which consist of 100 survivors, are working networks that provide support for newly diagnosed patients and those whose disease recurs.
Activity 3
Clinical Trials Operating Grant. See Schedule O.Expenses $359,057, including Grants of $359,057.TCSC Foundation provides an operating grant to the Thompson Cancer Survival Center ("TCSC" or "Thompson") for its Clinical Trials program. Without the support of the TCSC Foundation, there would be no TCSC Clinical Trials program, and TCSC could not offer the valuable, often life changing, treatment opportunities to the patients which it has the privilege of serving. Mission and Priorities:The program's primary mission is to promote access to cancer trials to Covenant Health System constituents in an effort to conquer cancer through clinical research. Clinical trials are an essential means of discovering more effective and safer treatments for cancer patients. Involvement in trials offers an improved means of health strategies for individuals at risk for certain cancers, as well as access to proven standard cancer treatments and new, developing cutting edge therapies for those diagnosed with cancer. Today's clinical trials are tomorrow's standard of cancer care. The Clinical Trials Department's priority is to become the leader in oncology research in the community. This will be achieved through the following measures: 1) by increasing access to clinical trials for patients in East Tennessee and the region through the provision of staff support to regional TCSC facilities; 2) by facilitating improved physician participation throughout all Thompson locations; 3) by increasing the number of available trials; 4) by increasing marketing efforts to promote clinical trials; 5) by opening additional satellite sites to clinical trials participation; and 6) by increasing screening efforts and tumor board conference attendance for all TCSC locations. The TCSC Clinical Trials program seeks to best serve patients in the community and contribute to the success of Thompson Cancer Survival Center and the Covenant Health system as a whole by staying true to the Thompson mission to "...lead to the cure through world class services focused on wellness, patient care and the celebration of survival," of which the TCSC clinical trials program is deeply rooted. Doing so will increase referrals locally and regionally and give current patients the ability to be treated with state-of-the-art care in their own community, not hundreds of miles from home in unfamiliar surroundings - away from their families and support systems.Research Operations Staffing: The Clinical Trials Department enjoys the support of the TCSC Foundation in providing clinical research coordination and fulfillment of regulatory compliance through the following staff efforts: * Manager * Clinical Research Nurse Coordinators * Clinical Research Associate * Regulatory Research Specialist Current Status of TCSC's Clinical Trials Program: * 22 open trials * 51 active treatment patients * 243 patients in follow-upIn 2012, TCSC Clinical Trials Department screened 1,400 patients for clinical trials participation and enrolled 84 patients in oncology clinical trials. Increased efforts have been made to attend Methodist Medical Center, Blount, Sevier and Parkwest tumor board meetings. To help with screening efforts, Research Nurse Coordinators have been assigned to specific physician schedules for screening and to specific locations for coverage, including TCSC's Oak Ridge, Sevierville, West, and Blount sites. The department added the TCSC Sevierville satellite location to clinical trials participation in 2011 and has plans to open up additional satellite locations in Lenoir City, Morristown, Rockwood, and Crossville in the near future. Doing so will require funding, physician and staffing support. Specifically, staffing support will allow for increased regulatory efficiency (which will enable the department the ability to process, open and manage an increased number of new clinical trial studies) and satellite research coordinator presence. Increasing physical nursing presence and support at satelli

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Expenses $379,526 including Grants of $379,526.The Foundation made grants to assist patients and other programs and services of the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. The most significant of these are further described below.PATIENT ASSISTANCEThe Fellowship Center is a free lodging and care facility for patients of TCSC coming to the area for treatment from 30 miles or more away. The Hands of Hope fund assisted breast cancer patients, both male and female, by paying for their utility bills, healthcare insurance premiums, prosthesis, wigs, lymphedema sleeves, transportation to and from treatment, groceries, house payment or rent.Thompson Cares is a fund to assist patients in crisis situations that are unable to provide the supplies and services necessary for their treatment plans. In 2012 the fund provided emergency funding for 636 patients to assist with needs such as medications, medical supplies, utilities, and transportation.EDUCATION & TREATMENT ADVANCEMENTMultidisciplinary Treatment facilitates specialty physicians discussing treatment options based on the individuality of one's circumstances. The Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Coordinator schedules a private consultation for each patient with the members of the specialty team. IRS990/Description0Social Services Operating Grant. See Schedule O.Expenses $401,509, including Grants of $401,509.The Foundation made a grant to support the operations of the Social Services Department of the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. In 2012, the Social Services Department reported 1,764 new patients and 4,089 follow-up patients. Additionally, 830 new patients and 2,846 follow-up patients were provided with nutritional counseling and education. The Social Services Department includes a Genetics Clinic staffed by two licensed and certified genetic counselors who provide breast cancer and hereditary cancer risk assessments and who coordinate genetic testing. In 2012, the Genetics Clinic counseled 338 new patients, including 226 who pursued genetic testing. Of those, 10.6% tested positive for a hereditary cancer syndrome. Whether patients tested positive or negative for a hereditary cancer syndrome, decided not to pursue testing, or were not appropriate candidates for testing, they and their families were able to make informed decisions regarding their medical management based on the genetic counseling they received.
