IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0TCSC Foundation supports the programs and services offered by Thompson Cancer Survival Center through charitable contributions.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Expenses $630,678, including Grants of $630,678.The Foundation made grants to assist patients and other programs and services of the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. The most significant of these are further described below.PATIENT ASSISTANCEThe Fellowship Center is a free lodging and care facility for patients of TCSC coming to the area for treatment from 30 miles or more away. The Hands of Hope fund assisted breast cancer patients, both male and female, by paying for their utility bills, healthcare insurance premiums, prosthesis, wigs, lymphedema sleeves, transportation to and from treatment, groceries, house payment or rent. The Foundation provided scholarships for women who could not have otherwise afforded to attend the Thompson Cancer Survival Center's annual Women's Wellness Retreat. The gathering provides women who are battling or have battled cancer an opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate their spirits and to meet other women who have faced cancer.EDUCATION & TREATMENT ADVANCEMENTThe Foundation provided funding for the formal affiliation agreement between Thompson Cancer Survival Center (TCSC) and the M.D. Anderson Physician's Network (MDA). Associated with this affiliation were multiple educational opportunities for nurses, physicians and other healthcare workers. The affiliation affirms Thompson Cancer Survival Center's exceptional quality of patient care, and gives physicians and patients of TCSC access to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's evidence-based guidelines and treatment plans, multidisciplinary planning, conferences, concordance studies and other resources coordinated by MDA. The knowledge TCSC gains through MDA will help prevent, diagnose and treat cancer more effectively.Multidisciplinary Treatment facilitates specialty physicians discussing treatment options based on the individuality of one's circumstances. The Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Coordinator schedules a private consultation for each patient with the members of the specialty team. This approach affords the opportunity for the physician to relate one-on-one with the patient and explain treatment choices in lay language.RESEARCHClinical Trials are conducted at TCSC with patients in order to discover better methods of prevention and treatment. Clinical Trials answer important scientific questions about promising new drugs or devices which lead to future advances in cancer care. The Foundation also provides funding for a radiation oncology research program in which University of Tennessee graduate students participate.

IRS990/Description0TCSC-Sevier Capital Infusion. See Schedule O.Expenses $2,000,000, including Grants of $2,000,000.The Foundation made a capital infusion to Thompson Cancer Survival Center for the Thompson Cancer Survival Center (TCSC)-Sevier, which officially opened its doors to the public on December 28, 2009.TCSC-Sevier, located on the LeConte Medical Center campus, is a 16,000 square-foot center that brings cancer care to the residents of Sevier and surrounding counties. Some of the services provided at TCSC-Sevier include: Radiation Therapy - The Elekta linear accelerator will provide patients with the most advanced and accurate radiation therapy available in East Tennessee. Approximately 120 patients in Sevier benefited from it in 2010. PET/CT Scanning - TCSC-Sevier was the first facility in the region to offer Positron-Emission Tomography (PET). With its higher resolution, the PET/CT at TCSC-Sevier can find tumors and the spread of cancer at the molecular level, long before they would become visible with other systems. It can also determine cancer stages for more effective treatment planning. The Sevier PET department served 58 patients in 2010. Medical Oncology / Hematology Physician Services - TCSC-Sevier has two board-certified medical oncologists and a nurse practitioner providing services to the Sevier community. Chemotherapy / Infusion Services - Leading-edge chemotherapy is now available at the TCSC-Sevier campus through LeConte Medical Center Infusion Services. Patients of TCSC-Sevier also have access to genetic counselors, dieticians, social workers as well as a host of clinical trials and multidisciplinary clinics. It is this dedication to the entire scope of patient care that sets Thompson Cancer Survival Center apart from the rest.
