Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The executive director completes the questionnaire provided by our tax and audit firm. The treasurer reviews the answers to the questionnaire before it goes to the tax/audit firm. Once a draft of form 990 is prepared, the treasurer, executive director and bookkeeper/accountant review it. Then it is shared via secure email with the rest of the board of directors for their review with a deadline to reply with any questions. Those questions are answered and the final 990 is completed, submitted and shared with the full board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Each year board members must complete a form indicating any affiliations they have with other organizations and companies, as well as confirming that they have read our conflict of interest policy. In addition, this is discussed at the first board meeting of the fiscal year.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

A committee of board members researched comparable nonprofit organizations and the full board discussed the executive director's compensation and each key employee's compensation fully before voting to approve them.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The documents are made available on givingmatters.com website as part of the organization's non-profit profile, guidestar, and upon request.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

PROCESS HAS NOT CHANGED.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

Book'em has a small endowment intended to provide stability and capacity building for the organization in the future to continue the fulfillment of our mission.

PART X, LINE 2:

We are exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and qualify for charitable deduction. We are not classified as a private organization. In accounting for uncertain income taxes, we recognized a tax position as a benefit only if it is "more likely than not" the tax position would be sustained in a tax examination, with a tax examination being presumed to occur. The amount recognized is the largest amount of tax benefit greater than 50 percent likely of being realized on examination. For tax positions not meeting the "more likely than not" test, no tax benefit is recorded. At december 31, 2022, we have no uncertain tax positions. We recognized interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits in interest and income tax expense, respectively. We have no amounts accrued for interest or penalties as of december 31, 2022. We are no longer subject to examination by u.s federal and state taxing authorities for fiscal years ending before 2019.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0READING IS FUNDAMENTAL (RIF) PROGRAM- RIF BUILDS UNDER-SERVED AND UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN'S LITERACY SKILLS, WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS. ELEMENTARY CHILDREN SELECT BOOKS FOR THEMSELVES TO CHERISH, ENJOY AND BUILD THEIR HOME LIBRARIES. THEY ARE ALSO EXPOSED TO RIF VOLUNTEERS AS POSITIVE COMMUNITY ROLE MODELS, WHO HELP MOTIVATE THEM TO LOVE READING AND BOOKS. DURING THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR, BOOK'EM PROVIDED 31,000 BOOKS TO APPROXIMATELY 6,000 ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHO ATTENDED FIFTEEN TITLE I METRO NASHVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS THROUGH OUR RIF PROGRAM. AN AVERAGE OF 80% OF THESE STUDENTS ARE CONSIDERED ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED, 72% ARE READING AT A BASIC OR BELOW BASIC READING LEVEL, AND 30% ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS. APPROXIMATELY 250 VOLUNTEERS VISITED THEIR ASSIGNED CLASSROOMS TO READ ALOUD AND ENGAGE WITH THE STUDENTS ABOUT 5 TIMES EACH THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. EVERY CHILD RECEIVED ABOUT 5 BOOKS WITH A TOTAL OF 31,000 BOOKS DISTRIBUTED.

BETWEEN JANUARY AND MAY 2023, 15 VOLUNTEERS VISITED THEIR ASSIGNED CLASSROOMS AND DEVELOPED STRONG READING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE STUDENTS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0READ ME DAY CELEBRATIONS- BOOK'EM HELD TWO READ ME DAY CELEBRATIONS AT TWO MNPS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2023. SEVERAL HUNDRED COMMUNITY GUESTS HELPED US CELEBRATE READING AT THESE SCHOOLS WITH AN ASSEMBLY PROGRAM FOLLOWED BY GUESTS READING ALOUD AND ENGAGING WITH EACH CLASSROOM. STUDENTS GOT TO SELECT TWO BOOKS TO TAKE HOME AS THEIR FOREVER BOOKS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1BOOK BUS- IN 2022, PARNASSUS BOOKS DONATED THEIR SMALL BOOK BUS TO BOOK'EM.
