Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Samaritan's purse is a nondenominational evangelical christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, samaritan's purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing god's love through his son, jesus christ. The organization serves the church worldwide to promote the gospel of the lord jesus christ.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Haiti relief: samaritan's purse disaster relief experts were on the ground within 24 hours of the powerful earthquake that devastated haiti on january, 12, 2010, launching the biggest emergency response in the organization's history. Our teams immediately began providing medical care and surgeries at a partner mission hospital and bringing clean water, food, blankets, and other relief to tens of thousands of suffering people. Since then, we have established a field office in the country, and our staff has worked around the clock to continue to provide relief to those who lost everything in the disaster. In addition, we quickly mobilized a medical, clean water, and hygiene education response to the cholera epidemic that began in october 2010. By the end of the year, we had built over 10,000 temporary shelters, fed hundreds of thousands of people, and treated more than 40,000 sick and injured haitians. As our staff and volunteers work there, we are focused on being witnesses for the gospel in word and deed, and many haitians have made decisions to follow jesus through our programs.
Activity 3
World medical mission (wmm): "he heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (psalm 147:3). Wmm supports missionary hospitals around the world by sending doctors, technicians, medicines, and equipment. Last year was the busiest year ever for this ministry. Our staff coordinated nearly 1,400 short-term mission trips for medical professionals to 38 hospitals and clinics in 34 countries. Our wmm warehouse also shipped 12 million of supplies to mission hospitals in 55 countries. The post-residency program, which offers two-year assignments to young doctors, placed 11 physicians in 2010.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0SAMARITAN'S PURSE IS A NONDENOMINATIONAL EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION PROVIDING SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL AID TO HURTING PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0THE MISSION OF SAMARITAN'S PURSE IS TO OBEDIENTLY SERVE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. AT THE CORE OF OUR MINISTRY IS THE BELIEF THAT MANKIND HAS BEEN SEPARATED FROM GOD BY SIN AND OUR ONLY HOPE OF SALVATION COMES FROM THE ATONING SACRIFICE OF GOD'S SON, JESUS CHRIST. "IF THOU SHALT CONFESS WITH THY MOUTH THE LORD JESUS, AND SHALT BELIEVE IN THINE HEART THAT GOD HATH RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, THOU SHALT BE SAVED" (ROMANS 10:9). ALTHOUGH MANY CLAIM TO BEHAVE MERCIFULLY TOWARD THEIR NEIGHBORS IN NEED OUT OF A SENSE OF SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS, SAMARITAN'S PURSE TAKES ITS NAME AND MANDATE FROM CHRIST'S INSTRUCTION THAT WE SHOULD FIRST LOVE THE LORD WITH OUR HEARTS, SOULS, MINDS, AND STRENGTH. CARING FOR OUR NEIGHBORS THEN FLOWS FROM OUR DEEP LOVE FOR GOD. THIS COMMAND IS ILLUSTRATED IN THE STORY OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN, AS RECORDED IN LUKE 10:25-37: "ON ONE OCCASION AN EXPERT IN THE LAW STOOD UP TO TEST JESUS. 'TEACHER,' HE ASKED, 'WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?' 'WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE LAW?' HE REPLIED. 'HOW DO YOU READ IT?' HE ANSWERED: 'LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND, LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' 'YOU HAVE ANSWERED CORRECTLY,' JESUS REPLIED. 'DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.' BUT HE WANTED TO JUSTIFY HIMSELF, SO HE ASKED JESUS, 'AND WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?' IN REPLY JESUS SAID: 'A MAN WAS GOING DOWN FROM JERUSALEM TO JERICHO WHEN HE FELL INTO THE HANDS OF ROBBERS. THEY STRIPPED HIM OF HIS CLOTHES, BEAT HIM AND WENT AWAY, LEAVING HIM HALF DEAD. A PRIEST HAPPENED TO BE GOING DOWN THE SAME ROAD, AND WHEN HE SAW THE MAN, HE PASSED BY ON THE OTHER SIDE. SO TOO, A LEVITE, WHEN HE CAME TO THE PLACE AND SAW HIM, PASSED BY ON THE OTHER SIDE. BUT A SAMARITAN, AS HE TRAVELED, CAME WHERE THE MAN WAS; AND WHEN HE SAW HIM, HE TOOK PITY ON HIM. HE WENT TO HIM AND BANDAGED HIS WOUNDS, POURING ON OIL AND WINE. THE HE PUT THE MAN ON HIS OWN DONKEY, TOOK HIM TO AN INN AND TOOK CARE OF HIM. THE NEXT DAY HE TOOK OUT TWO SILVER COINS AND GAVE THEM TO THE INNKEEPER. 'LOOK AFTER HIM,' HE SAID, 'AND WHEN I RETURN, I WILL REIMBURSE YOU FOR ANY EXTRA EXPENSE YOU MAY HAVE.' 'WHICH OF THESE THREE DO YOU THINK WAS A NEIGHBOR TO THE MAN WHO FELL INTO THE HANDS OF ROBBERS?' THE EXPERT IN THE LAW REPLIED, 'THE ONE WHO HAD MERCY ON HIM.' JESUS TOLD HIM, 'GO AND DO LIKEWISE.'" AT SAMARITAN'S PURSE, WE ARE RESPONDING TO CHRIST'S COMMAND TO "GO AND DO LIKEWISE" AS WE MINISTER TO THOSE SUFFERING FROM THE RESULTS OF SIN IN OUR WORLD: WAR, FAMINE, DISASTERS, AND DISEASE. THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT "THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS, AND DESPERATELY WICKED: WHO CAN KNOW IT?" (JEREMIAH 17:9). IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, WE READ THAT "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH" (ROMANS 6:23). BECAUSE OF THE DISOBEDIENCE OF ADAM AND EVE, EVERY HUMAN BEING IS BORN WITH THE STAIN OF SIN, WHICH, WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST, ULTIMATELY LEADS TO PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL DEATH. THE LORD, IN HIS MERCY, HOWEVER, HAS GIVEN US A CHOICE: SPEND ETERNITY IN HIS PRESENCE OR SEPARATED IN A PLACE THE BIBLE CALLS HELL. JOHN 3:16 SAYS, "GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE." THE LORD SENT HIS BELOVED SON, JESUS CHRIST, OUT OF HEAVEN TO THIS EARTH ON A RESCUE MISSION. HE TOOK OUR SINS UPON HIMSELF, SUFFERING AND DYING ON A ROMAN CROSS. HE TOOK OUR SINS TO THE GRAVE, AND ON THE THIRD DAY, HE AROSE AGAIN. THROUGH HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION, JESUS PROVIDED A WAY FOR US TO RESTORE OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. HE SAID, "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE: NO MAN COMETH TO THE FATHER BUT BY ME" (JOHN 14:6). IF YOU ARE NOT SURE THAT YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN SO THAT YOU CAN STAND BEFORE THE HOLY GOD, YOU CAN BE SURE BY PRAYING THIS SIMPLE PRAYER: "DEAR GOD, I AM A SINNER. I AM SORRY FOR MY SINS. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. HELP ME TO TURN FROM MY SINFUL LIFE. I BELIEVE BY FAITH THAT JESUS CHRIST IS YOUR SON WHO DIED FOR MY SINS, WHOM YOU HAVE RAISED TO LIFE. I

IRS990/Description0OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (OCC): FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES, SAMARITAN'S PURSE HAS BROUGHT THE LOVE OF CHRIST TO OVER 80 MILLION CHILDREN THROUGH ITS OCC MINISTRY. CARING CHRISTIANS FROM THE U.S. AND OTHER NATIONS PACK SHOE BOXES WITH SMALL TOYS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, ARTICLES OF CLOTHING, CANDY, AND OTHER FUN GIFTS. THESE BOXES ARE THEN SHIPPED TO DESTINATIONS AROUND THE WORLD AND HAND-DELIVERED TO CHILDREN LIVING IN THE MIDST OF POVERTY, WAR, AND DISASTER. THROUGH THIS PROJECT, SAMARITAN'S PURSE IS ABLE TO PARTNER WITH LOCAL CHURCHES TO SHARE THE GOSPEL WITH YOUNGSTERS WHOSE LIVES ARE OFTEN FILLED WITH DESPAIR. CHURCH LEADERS ARE THEN ABLE TO USE THE GREATEST JOURNEY DISCIPLESHIP MATERIALS TO TEACH THESE CHILDREN MORE ABOUT THE ONE WHO SAID, "LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME TO ME..., FOR TO SUCH BELONGS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN." IN 2010, OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD COLLECTED 8.2 MILLION SHOE BOXES FROM THE U.S. AND OTHER COUNTRIES TO DISTRIBUTE TO CHILDREN OVERSEAS. THIS WAS THE LARGEST NUMBER OF SHOE BOXES EVER COLLECTED IN ONE SEASON.
