Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Samaritan's purse is a nondenominational evangelical christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, samaritan's purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing god's love through his son, jesus christ. The organization serves the church worldwide to promote the gospel of the lord jesus christ.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Haiti: samaritan's purse has provided desperately needed relief to nearly one million people in the two years since a devastating earthquake hit this small caribbean nation. In 2011, we completed construction on transitional housing for about 75,000 people, and tens of thousands received safe drinking water from our community filtration systems. Our livelihood projects helped women in the worst slum in the western hemisphere by teaching them skills such as basic nursing, cosmetology, and sewing. Last year, we also provided medical care for more than 110,000 people, including 23,000 who were at risk of death from cholera. This foundation enables us to share the hope of the gospel. "for we are god's fellow workers; you are god's field, god's building" (1 corinthians 3:9, niv).
Activity 3
World medical mission (wmm): in 2011, world medical mission sent 454 volunteer doctors and dentists to 32 countries around the globe. These dedicated believers use their specialized skills to provide life-saving medical care and train local staff. They also minister to their patients by sharing the love of the great physician with those in need of spiritual healing. "heal the sickand tell them 'the kingdom of god is near you'" (luke 10:9, niv). The wmm post-residency program is preparing a new generation of career medical missionaries. Last year, nine new physicians and their families began two-year assignments in nepal, togo, zimbabwe, gabon, and macao. Several doctors who have already completed the post- residency program have now dedicated their careers to missionary service. In 2011, we also shipped over 4 million of medical supplies and equipment to 20 hospitals in 13 nations.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0SAMARITAN'S PURSE IS A NONDENOMINATIONAL EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION PROVIDING SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL AID TO HURTING PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0THE MISSION OF SAMARITAN'S PURSE IS TO OBEDIENTLY SERVE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. AT THE CORE OF OUR MINISTRY IS THE BELIEF THAT MANKIND HAS BEEN SEPARATED FROM GOD BY SIN AND OUR ONLY HOPE OF SALVATION COMES FROM THE ATONING SACRIFICE OF GOD'S SON, JESUS CHRIST. "IF THOU SHALT CONFESS WITH THY MOUTH THE LORD JESUS, AND SHALT BELIEVE IN THINE HEART THAT GOD HATH RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, THOU SHALT BE SAVED" (ROMANS 10:9). ALTHOUGH MANY CLAIM TO BEHAVE MERCIFULLY TOWARD THEIR NEIGHBORS IN NEED OUT OF A SENSE OF SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS, SAMARITAN'S PURSE TAKES ITS NAME AND MANDATE FROM CHRIST'S INSTRUCTION THAT WE SHOULD FIRST LOVE THE LORD WITH OUR HEARTS, SOULS, MINDS, AND STRENGTH. CARING FOR OUR NEIGHBORS THEN FLOWS FROM OUR DEEP LOVE FOR GOD. THIS COMMAND IS ILLUSTRATED IN THE STORY OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN, AS RECORDED IN LUKE 10:25-37: "ON ONE OCCASION AN EXPERT IN THE LAW STOOD UP TO TEST JESUS. 'TEACHER,' HE ASKED, 'WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?' 'WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE LAW?' HE REPLIED. 'HOW DO YOU READ IT?' HE ANSWERED: 'LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND, LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' 'YOU HAVE ANSWERED CORRECTLY,' JESUS REPLIED. 'DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.' BUT HE WANTED TO JUSTIFY HIMSELF, SO HE ASKED JESUS, 'AND WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?' IN REPLY JESUS SAID: 'A MAN WAS GOING DOWN FROM JERUSALEM TO JERICHO WHEN HE FELL INTO THE HANDS OF ROBBERS. THEY STRIPPED HIM OF HIS CLOTHES, BEAT HIM AND WENT AWAY, LEAVING HIM HALF DEAD. A PRIEST HAPPENED TO BE GOING DOWN THE SAME ROAD, AND WHEN HE SAW THE MAN, HE PASSED BY ON THE OTHER SIDE. SO TOO, A LEVITE, WHEN HE CAME TO THE PLACE AND SAW HIM, PASSED BY ON THE OTHER SIDE. BUT A SAMARITAN, AS HE TRAVELED, CAME WHERE THE MAN WAS; AND WHEN HE SAW HIM, HE TOOK PITY ON HIM. HE WENT TO HIM AND BANDAGED HIS WOUNDS, POURING ON OIL AND WINE. THEN HE PUT THE MAN ON HIS OWN DONKEY, TOOK HIM TO AN INN AND TOOK CARE OF HIM. THE NEXT DAY HE TOOK OUT TWO SILVER COINS AND GAVE THEM TO THE INNKEEPER. 'LOOK AFTER HIM,' HE SAID, 'AND WHEN I RETURN, I WILL REIMBURSE YOU FOR ANY EXTRA EXPENSE YOU MAY HAVE.' 'WHICH OF THESE THREE DO YOU THINK WAS A NEIGHBOR TO THE MAN WHO FELL INTO THE HANDS OF ROBBERS?' THE EXPERT IN THE LAW REPLIED, 'THE ONE WHO HAD MERCY ON HIM.' JESUS TOLD HIM, 'GO AND DO LIKEWISE.'" AT SAMARITAN'S PURSE, WE ARE RESPONDING TO CHRIST'S COMMAND TO "GO AND DO LIKEWISE" AS WE MINISTER TO THOSE SUFFERING FROM THE RESULTS OF SIN IN OUR WORLD: WAR, FAMINE, DISASTERS, AND DISEASE. THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT "THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS, AND DESPERATELY WICKED: WHO CAN KNOW IT?" (JEREMIAH 17:9). IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, WE READ THAT "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH" (ROMANS 6:23). BECAUSE OF THE DISOBEDIENCE OF ADAM AND EVE, EVERY HUMAN BEING IS BORN WITH THE STAIN OF SIN, WHICH, WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST, ULTIMATELY LEADS TO PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL DEATH. THE LORD, IN HIS MERCY, HOWEVER, HAS GIVEN US A CHOICE: SPEND ETERNITY IN HIS PRESENCE OR SEPARATED IN A PLACE THE BIBLE CALLS HELL. JOHN 3:16 SAYS, "GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE." THE LORD SENT HIS BELOVED SON, JESUS CHRIST, OUT OF HEAVEN TO THIS EARTH ON A RESCUE MISSION. HE TOOK OUR SINS UPON HIMSELF, SUFFERING AND DYING ON A ROMAN CROSS. HE TOOK OUR SINS TO THE GRAVE, AND ON THE THIRD DAY, HE AROSE AGAIN. THROUGH HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION, JESUS PROVIDED A WAY FOR US TO RESTORE OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. HE SAID, "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE: NO MAN COMETH TO THE FATHER BUT BY ME" (JOHN 14:6). IF YOU ARE NOT SURE THAT YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN SO THAT YOU CAN STAND BEFORE THE HOLY GOD, YOU CAN BE SURE BY PRAYING THIS SIMPLE PRAYER: "DEAR GOD, I AM A SINNER. I AM SORRY FOR MY SINS. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. HELP ME TO TURN FROM MY SINFUL LIFE. I BELIEVE BY FAITH THAT JESUS CHRIST IS YOUR SON WHO DIED FOR MY SINS, WHOM YOU HAVE RAISED TO LIFE.

IRS990/Description0OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (OCC): "YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN IS NOT WILLING THAT ANY OF THESE LITTLE ONES SHOULD BE LOST" (MATTHEW 18:14B, NIV). SINCE 1993, MORE THAN 94 MILLION BOYS AND GIRLS IN OVER 130 COUNTRIES HAVE EXPERIENCED GOD'S LOVE THROUGH OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD. THIS PROJECT OF SAMARITAN'S PURSE ENCOURAGES COMPASSIONATE CHRISTIANS IN THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES TO PACK SHOE BOX GIFTS FULL OF TREATS SUCH AS SMALL TOYS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES. OUR STAFF AND MINISTRY PARTNERS THEN COLLECT, PROCESS AND HAND-DELIVER THESE GIFTS TO MILLIONS OF HURTING CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD. THESE GIFTS OPEN THE DOOR FOR LOCAL CHURCHES TO SHARE THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD'S GREATEST GIFT-HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST-WITH YOUNGSTERS WHO NEED TO KNOW HOW MUCH JESUS LOVES THEM. IN 2011, OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD COLLECTED OVER 6 MILLION SHOE BOX GIFTS FROM THE U.S. AND APPROXIMATELY 2.6 MILLION SHOE BOX GIFTS FROM AFFILIATE OFFICES IN OTHER COUNTRIES TO DISTRIBUTE TO CHILDREN OVERSEAS.
