FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Mission: our healing mission is to improve the lives of individuals struggling with mental illness or other mental health challenges by helping them work towards achieving their highest levels of functioning and fulfillment. Vision: we envision a future where the stigma against individuals with mental health conditions has disappeared, where all individuals with mental illness will have the opportunity to recover, and where these individuals will be accepted into their communities as responsible and contributing citizens. We believe that recovery from serious mental illness is possible. We also believe that recovery comes in different forms. At our residential treatment centers, we give our residents the right to define their mental health recovery, whether it's to live independently, gain satisfying employment or achieve a higher level of meaningful social interaction. Our story: cooperriis inc, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in western north carolina. It was founded in 2000 and opened in 2003 by don and lisbeth riis cooper following the structure envisioned almost 100 years ago by gould farm (ma) and spring lake ranch (va). Cooperriis serves residents from the us and other countries and provides a continuum of residential treatment services to people with mental health challenges. Cooperriis is designed to incorporate elements of the recovery and therapeutic healing community model, which works in partnership with residents, so the recovery journey becomes an individualized experience. Residents are empowered and supported in their efforts to grow from their mental health challenges to ultimately integrate into their home communities. Cooperriis is not a "medical model" as such, but it is typical for residents to reflect one or more diagnosis such as schizophrenia, schizo- effective disorder, bipolar, major depressive or anxiety disorder, aspergers, borderline or avoidant personality disorder. Cooperriis is guided by the belief that lasting recovery is woven with hope and embodies a strong belief and focus on community, work and service. This belief combined with the fabric of clinical services and wellness creates the condition where meaningful and lasting recovery can occur. Cooperriis opened its doors in 2003 and since that time has served over 2,300 individuals. Outcomes for the program have been positive with most residents moving on to meaningful and rewarding lives. -88% of former residents reported no psychiatric hospitalizations one year after discharge, -75% of former residents reported they were working, going to school or volunteering in the community, -71% of former residents reported that they were living independently. The foundation of our approach is putting the resident at the center as the driving force of the recovery experience. Instead of having a medical focus on diagnosis, a staff person might ask "what is your dream?" building on such real-life conversations about dreams and hopes can integrate aspirations into specific goals that meaningfully become part of the recovery process. Adding our 'seven domains of life' further expands the conversation: social/community connectedness spirituality purpose/productivity/fulfillment empowerment/independence emotional/psychological health physical wellness intellectual/learning/creativity different programming is offered at each of three locations, depending on where a resident's needs fit our continuum of care.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

The organization provides living quarters (as necessary) to volunteers providing over 30 hours of service per week.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The farm our core program is at the farm which is on 94-acres located in mill spring, nc near asheville. The farm has 36 separate rooms in three lodges with private baths for adult men and women aged 18 and over. Residents engage in meaningful work activities in partnership with a full array of clinical services. Staff and residents live, work and play together to form a community that supports and provides the core for supported recovery. The average stay at the farm is 3-6 months, when residents often move on into our asheville community program where skills of independent living are learned. An area of focus at the farm are services for autism and neurodiversity. Rather than having a separate program for autism spectrum disorder, we have intentionally implemented tools and techniques that help someone with neurodiversity and level 1 autism to have a better treatment experience while in our care. Cooperriis offers a partial scholarship program for farm residents beginning at the third month of stay. Since opening in 2003, cooperriis has provided rate reductions in excess of 32 million. An extended care program is offered as well for longer term placements.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

The partial hospitalization program (php) is a highly structured day program in downtown asheville, nc. With a strong wellness approach, the holistic program focuses on psychosocial needs and skills building. Each member participates five hours per day in group and/or individual therapy as well as case and medication management.
