Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 1A

The executive committee is made up of the chair and vice-chair and two other board members. The four members are elected every year at the annual board meeting and serve the sole purpose of providing for a board conversation between board meetings if needed. Since the board meets only four times per year, this allows for addressing issues immediately if needed, rather than having to call a special meeting or waiting until our next scheduled meeting. Historically, the executive committee has met 1-2 times per year. The executive committee has the authority to make board level decisions on behalf of the board (with communication to the board at its next meeting). The executive committee also provides a forum for advice/counsel to the chair, vice-chair, and executive director. The executive director is usually invited to attend all executive committee meetings.

Board members, officers, directors, and trustees are required to review and submit a conflict of interest questionnaire annually. All potential conflicts are disclosed to the board chair and executive director and reviewed by the full board as needed.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

Compensation for the executive director reported on this return was reviewed by the board of directors in april 2019. (currently under three- year contract.) the compensation package is established in a written employment contract, and was determined by an internally prepared compensation study of similar positions. The compensation agreement was accepted by a vote of the board of directors. Next planned review as of date of filing: june 2022

Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Helping people with mental health challenges achieve their highest level of fulfillment and functioning. - our story - cooperriis, inc. Is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in western north carolina that serves residents from around the us and other countries. Cooperriis is a therapeutic healing community and is designed to offer a continuum of residential treatment services to people with mental health challenges. Cooperriis is designed to incorporate elements of the recovery and therapeutic healing community models. A therapeutic healing community is a place that works in partnership with residents in which the recovery journey is an individualized experience and in which residents are empowered and supported in their efforts to heal and grow from their mental health challenges. The goal of the program is for residents to ultimately integrate into their home communities and work, go to school, or volunteer. Residents must be at least eighteen years old at admission. While cooperriis is not a "medical model", it is typical for residents to carry mental health diagnoses such as schizophrenia, major depression, and other dsm (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental health disorders) diagnoses. Cooperriis is guided by the belief that lasting recovery is woven with hope and embodies a strong belief and focus on community, work, and service. This belief system woven within a fabric of clinical services and wellness create the conditions by which meaningful and lasting recovery can occur. Cooperriis opened its doors in june 2003 and since that time has served over 1,800 people. Outcomes for the program have been positive with most residents moving on to meaningful work, school, or volunteer experiences in their home communities. The typical resident may have experienced multiple psychiatric hospitalizations prior to coming to cooperriis but follow-up surveys indicate a reduction in psychiatric hospitalizations following their time at cooperriis. The farm at cooperriis, located in mill spring nc can serve a maximum of thirty-six residents on its 94-acre farm campus. Residents engage in meaningful work activities in partnership with a full array of clinical services. Cooperriis at asheville is a twenty-four bed, short term clinically intensive program that serves a similar population of residents who are in the early stages of their recovery journey. Residents often transition to the farm after their short-term stay in the cooperriis at asheville program. Cooperriis at asheville is located in the historic montford section of asheville, north carolina adjacent to the university of north carolina - asheville campus and downtown asheville. The asheville community program is the final step within the cooperriis continuum of program services. Residents who have completed their residential treatment experience can move into one of five community-based houses to continue their recovery work. The cooperriis community was developed to integrate essential elements of the recovery model which stresses a person-centered approach in which the resident is the center and driving force of the recovery experience. The team partners with the residents to develop a plan to help the resident heal and take steps to living a balanced and productive life that incorporates their dreams, hopes, and aspirations. The seven domains of recovery include: -social/community connectedness -spirituality -purpose/productivity/fulfillment -empowerment/independence -emotional/psychological health -physical wellness -intellectual/learning/creativity the typical length-of-stay at each of the programs is as follows: -the farm at cooperriis: 4-6 months -cooperriis at asheville: 30-45 days -asheville community program (acp): 12 months or longer cooperriis offers a partial scholarship program for farm residents. Beginning at the third month of stay, residents/families can apply for a partial rate reduction. Since opening in 2003, cooperriis has provided rate redu
