Mission

Community Support Systems' mission is to help low- and moderate-income families and senior citizens access services and to provide local programs that will raise the quality of life, dignity, and independence in the community. The board and the faithful community of volunteers work tirelessly to do one thing improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable neighbors in southern Prince George's and northern Charles counties in MD.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The organization is exempt from federal and local income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code on any net income derived from activities related to its exempt purpose. This code section enables the organization to accept donations that qualify as charitable contributions to the donor. The organization is subject to tax on net income from unrelated business activities. For the years ended June 30, 2016 and 2015, the organization did not recognize income tax expense in the accompanying financial statements as there was no unrelated business taxable income. CSS is not aware of any activities that would jeopardize its tax-exempt status that would require recognition in the accompanying financial statements, pursuant to Accounting Standards (ASC) for Income Taxes. Generally, tax returns are subject to examination by taxing authorities for up to three years from the date a completed return is filed. If there are material omissions of income, tax returns may be subject to examination for up to six years. It is the organizations policy to recognize interest and/or penalties related to uncertain tax positions, if any, in income tax expense. As of June 30, 2016 and 2015, the organization had no accruals for interest and/or penalties.

IRS990/Desc0The CSS Food Pantry Program operates two food pantries which are open a total of three times per week. There is no charge for food distributed at the pantries or for grocery delivery to homes of individuals unable to attend the pantry. During fiscal year 2016 hundreds of individual visits and grocery deliveries were made. In addition, CSS provided families with emergency boxes of food due to job loss, medical problems, additional family members moving in, fires, or other unexpected situations.

Clients received a variety of services Including help writing resumes, filling out energy assistance requests, obtaining school supplies for their children, working through difficult family situations, applying for photo ID, keeping medical appointments, finding housing and meeting many more needs. Limited financial help made the difference between an automobile that rurns, has insurance, and current tags, the home that has heat, the rent or mortgage was paid, the baby-sitter paid, transportation to a new job was possible, shelter for the night, and more. The CSS Assistance Fund helped scores of beneficiaries.
