Part i, line 1 organizations mission continued we accomplish this mission through an engaging suite of hands-on programming and by bringing visitors to our unique location, at the mouth of back creek overlooking the chesapeake bay.

Financial Statement Notes

III 1A

The organization collection is made up of artifacts of historical significance and art objects that are held for educational, research and curatorial purposes. The collection includes accessioned boats and equipment. Each of the items is catalogued, preserved and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The collection, which has been acquired through purchases and contributions since the organization inception, is not recognized as an asset on the statements of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in net assets without donor restrictions if the assets used to purchase the items are acquired, or as net assets with donor restrictions if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as changes in the appropriate net asset classes.

The organization collections feature works of maritime art, sculptures, and historical documents. These collections advance the organization exempt purpose by serving as resources for public exhibitions, scholarly research, and long-term preservation for future generations. The museum offers a regular schedule of exhibitions open to the public, provides research access upon request, and operates conservation programs to safeguard the artworks over time. The collections are maintained not for financial gain, but to educate the public about chesapeake bay region history.

The organization is exempt from income taxes under internal revenue code 501c3. In addition, the organization has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under section 509a1. There was no net unrelated business taxable income therefore, no provision for income tax is reflected in the financial statements. The organization informational filings are subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally for three years after filing.
