Activity 2

Public policy, education & training: hrcf focuses on the issues and institutions that affect lgbt americans - workplaces, hospitals, schools, and faith communities and works to build understanding and alliances among diverse groups and individuals. In 2011 hrcf launched "on the road to equality," a nationwide bus tour to spread the message of equality by educating the american public and empowering lgbt people to become advocates for themselves and their families. The 12 week tour traveled to 17 cities in 11 states and d.c., with particular emphasis on the midwest and south where there are limited legal protections for lgbt people and living openly and honestly can be difficult. Events included everything from discussions on adoption and foster care for prospective parents, to educational seminars on legal documents for families, to community forums about family acceptance, to town hall meetings on the state of the lgbt movement, to clebrations of faith to engaging students on college campuses. Hrcf promotes equal benefits, non-discrimination protections and education among major corporations. With the absence of a federal nondiscrimination law and limited state protections, the hrc foundations' "corporate equality index" has helped transform the american workplace for the past ten years. This year the cei's criteria became more stringent, especially as relates to policies and benefits for transgender employees and 190 corporations, across industries, geographies and size, received a 100 percent score, including 10 of the top 20 fortune-ranked companies. The "healthcare equality index" assesses policies and practices of hospitals and health care institutions for their lgbt patients and employees. In 2012, a record 407 facilities were represented in the hei, with an unprecedented 57% designated as leaders. The hei 2012 also provided lgbt health education to well over 1,000 senior administrators at facilities around the country, an unparalleled training initiative. The religion and faith program builds bridges between lgbt individuals, their families and faith communities to inform america that one need not choose between religion and being lgbt. A significant focus of hrcf's work is on youth with programs such as "welcoming schools" which brings an anti-bullying curriculum and training to schools; "all children all families" which works with adoption agencies to build lgbt cultural competance among child welfare professionals and to promote policies and practices that welcome lgbt foster and adoptive parents; and "generation equality" which reaches out to lgbt college students and their straight allies.

Activity 3

Federal, field and legal advocacy: hrcf made a grant pursuant to section 501(h) to the human rights campaign to conduct lobbying on issues of importance to lgbt americans.
