Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The international life sciences institute (ilsi) research foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to bring scientists together to improve human health and environmental sustainability. In carrying out this mission, ilsi research foundation successfully collaborates with scientists from government, academia, industry and non-governmental organizations to identify the best available science related to common challenges.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Center for risk science innovation and application - the center assembles international, stakeholder-balanced expert groups to develop and apply decision approaches to reduce wasted resources and improve health. During 2012, rsia supported work in the areas of nanotechnology safety for consumer applications and foods, guidance development for water reuse for bottling facilities, and development of decision frameworks safety data development for antimicrobials. These efforts involved assembling multi-stakeholder expert groups to develop guidance, evaluations, and methods, and to share the latest scientific understanding on the topics addressed. For example, the nanotechnology activities develop and convey state of the science evaluations and methods to measure nanomaterials that involve nearly 200 experts from around the world. Public workshops at the consumer product safety commission in bethesda, md and at the pew charitable trusts washington, dc in 2012 brought leading scientists from around the world to provide advice and share findings on what materials and methods need attention to best improve our ability to measure exposure to nanomaterials. The center also works through grants to support research, and issued a grant in 2012 to harvard university school of public health for a march 2014 conference on methods to measure the health effects of risk perceptions.
Activity 3
Center for nutrition and health promotion - this center undertakes translational research in nutrition to quickly move basic scientific knowledge to public health use. Under this framework, the foundation developed and evaluated system fit, translational tools for young children and families that can be applied through the supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children (wic). These tools allow the wic staff to identify children at risk for obesity and to communicate helpful information to the caregiver. The foundation also produced a set of evidence-based reviews of available data related to energy balance. These reviews will identify knowledge gaps so that more effective research can be conducted.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0CENTER FOR RISK SCIENCE INNOVATION AND APPLICATION - THE CENTER ASSEMBLES INTERNATIONAL, STAKEHOLDER-BALANCED EXPERT GROUPS TO DEVELOP AND APPLY DECISION APPROACHES TO REDUCE WASTED RESOURCES AND IMPROVE HEALTH.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0CENTER FOR NUTRITION AND HEALTH PROMOTION - THIS CENTER UNDERTAKES TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH IN NUTRITION TO QUICKLY MOVE BASIC SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE TO PUBLIC HEALTH USE.
