Activity 2

Translational research - nutrition and physical activity - the objective of translational research is to quickly move basic scientific knowledge to public health use. Ilsi rf's take 10!(r) program is a system fit tool for use in elementary school classrooms and is the result of translational research. Based on formative, process and outcome evaluation, take 10! Has been developed to aid elementary school teachers in integrating age-specific physical activity with grade-specific learning objectives in math, social studies, geography, etc. Increasing physical activity is a critical component of managing body weight in children. Published data demonstrate that take 10! Increases physical activity while improving students' attention to the curriculum being taught and test scores. The foundation is also developing and evaluating system fit, translational tools for young children and families that can be applied through the supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children (wic).

Activity 3

Center for risk science innovation and application - diminishing availability of natural resources, growing populations, and increasing financial constraints put pressure on society to achieve more with less in ensuring human safety and well-being. Rsia addresses this challenge through international, stakeholder-balanced expert groups to develop and apply decision approaches for unmet needs in human health risk management where application of new methods and approaches will reduce waste and improve health. During 2010, rsia initiated work in the areas of risk of risk perception and nanotechnology and continued efforts to apply the threshold of toxicological concern to antimicrobials and application of the key events dose-response framework to evaluate the risk low-dose exposure to chemicals and nutrients. The risk of risk perception work is aimed at addressing unintended consequences of public health policies that arise from risk perception that may also increase public health risk. The nanotechnology activities are designed to develop a "state-of-the-science" understanding of the potential for release of nanomaterials and to develop appropriate methods for testing for such release.
