Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Eesi was formed more than 30 years ago as an independent not-for-profit organization by a bipartisan group of members of congress, including founder and board member, former representative richard ottinger (d-ny), who identified a need for policymakers to have greater access to fact-based information on energy and environmental issues, and created eesi to fill it. Today, eesi continues to be a trusted source of non-partisan information and innovative, common-sense approaches to energy, climate, transportation, and related policies. As part of its work, eesi conducts congressional briefings, produces fact sheets, and publishes free weekly newsletters ("climate change news and "sustainable bioenergy, farms, and forest"). All of these resources are available via e-mail and on our website, www.eesi.org.

The organization is dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable societies.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The processes have not changed from the prior year.

FORM 990, PART 1, LINE 19:

The current year net income of $824,508 was due to multi-year pledges received and recorded in the current year. Some of the expenses associated with the multi-year pledges were not expensed in the current year, therefore it is expected that future years may have net losses.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Eesi requires that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more likely-than-not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. Eesi does not believe its financial statements include, or reflect, any uncertain tax positions. Eesi's irs form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, is subject to examination by the federal and state authorities, generally for three years after they were filed.

HAVING CELEBRATED OUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2014, EESI IS A TRUSTED SOURCE OF NON-PARTISAN INFORMATION AND INNOVATIVE POLICY APPROACHES THROUGH OUR HIGHLY REGARDED CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFINGS, OUR FACT SHEETS (7 IN 2014), AND OUR FREE WEEKLY NEWSLETTERS, "CLIMATE CHANGE NEWS" AND "SUSTAINABLE BIOENERGY, FARMS, AND FOREST." ALL OF THESE RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE VIA E-MAIL AND ON OUR WEBSITE, WWW.EESI.ORG. FOR EXAMPLE, WE EXPLAINED THE REGIONAL IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES IN A SERIES OF SIX BRIEFINGS; HIGHLIGHTED THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WELL-PAID JOBS BEING CREATED BY THE RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY SECTORS; AND SHED LIGHT ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY'S EFFORTS TO REDUCE U.S. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS THROUGH ITS PROPOSED CLEAN POWER PLAN.IN 2014, EESI LAUNCHED A MAJOR EXPANSION OF ITS INITIATIVE TO EXPAND RESIDENTIAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY RETROFITS THROUGH ON-BILL FINANCING INTO A NATIONAL EFFORT TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND COMFORT OF HOMES SERVED BY RURAL ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES AND PUBLIC UTILITIES, WHILE REDUCING CONSUMERS' ENERGY BILLS. ADOPTION OF THIS APPROACH CUTS ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS WHILE IMPROVING HOME COMFORT AND ENERGY AFFORDABILITY. THANKS IN PART TO EESI'S WORK, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE FUNDS TOTALING $625 MILLION OVER 5 YEARS ARE AVAILABLE FOR RURAL UTILITIES TO CARRY OUT ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS, INCLUDING ON-BILL FINANCING. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0HIGH PERFORMANCE GREEN BUILDINGS PROGRAM:THE GOAL OF THE HIGH PERFORMANCE GREEN BUILDINGS (HPGB) PROGRAM IS TO PROMOTE POLICIES THAT DRAMATICALLY REDUCE BUILDING ENERGY USE (BUILDINGS USE MORE THAN 40 PERCENT OF THE NATION'S ENERGY). INCREASING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUILDINGS IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE AND LOWER ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION AND BILLS. INDEED, BEYOND CLIMATE MITIGATION, HIGH PERFORMANCE GREEN BUILDINGS CAN PROVIDE IMPROVED AFFORDABILITY, HEALTH, SAFETY, AND RESALE VALUE. IN 2014, EESI HELD BRIEFINGS TO SHOW WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MAKE BUILDINGS MORE RESILIENT WHILE ALSO MAKING THEM MORE AFFORDABLE AND SUSTAINABLE. STRONG AND GREEN BUILDINGS CAN WITHSTAND HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS, CONSERVE ENERGY AND WATER, AND REMAIN OPERATIONAL DURING A POWER OUTAGE. EESI'S WORK HIGHLIGHTS THAT AFFORDABILITY IS NOT AT ODDS WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE, AND CAN GO HAND-IN-HAND.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS AND ENERGY PROGRAM: THE SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS AND ENERGY (SBE) PROGRAM SEEKS TO ADVANCE RENEWABLE BIOENERGY (BIOFUELS AND BIOMASS) AS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN AMERICA'S CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION STRATEGY, AND AS A WAY TO REDUCE ITS DEPENDENCE ON OIL. IN 2014, EESI EXAMINED THE RENEWABLE FUEL STANDARD, WHICH HAS HELPED LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR BIOFUELS COMPETING WITH PETROLEUM PRODUCTS. OUR SPEAKERS HIGHLIGHTED THE LATEST RESEARCH ON BIOFUELS, WHICH FINDS THEM TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY AND CLIMATE-FRIENDLY THAN FOSSIL FUELS. THEY ALSO DESCRIBED HOW CELLULOSIC ETHANOL, A BIOFUEL MADE WITH ORGANIC WASTE, IS REACHING COMMERCIAL SCALE. EESI CALLED ATTENTION TO THE HARMFUL HEALTH EFFECTS OF THE ULTRA-FINE PARTICULATE MATTER FOUND IN GASOLINE VEHICLE EMISSIONS. CHEMICALS KNOWN AS AROMATICS REPRESENT ABOUT 25 PERCENT OF EACH GALLON OF GASOLINE. INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION OF THESE AROMATICS FORMS ULTRA-FINE PARTICLES WHICH ACT AS CARRIERS FOR TOXIC CHEMICALS, CARRYING THEM INTO SOFT BODY TISSUES AND BLOODSTREAMS. EESI IS PUSHING TO GIVE THIS ISSUE THE VISIBILITY IT DESERVES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0TRANSPORTATION AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM:THE GOAL OF THE TRANSPORTATION AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES (TSC) PROGRAM IS TWO-FOLD: TO ADVANCE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION POLICIES (CLEANER VEHICLES AND FUELS, PUBLIC TRANSIT, BIKING, WALKING), AND TO HELP COMMUNITIES MAKE GREATER USE OF LOCAL RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES AND ENERGY EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES AND DESIGNS.IN OUR TRANSPORTATION WORK, WE HELD SEVERAL BRIEFINGS ON BIOFUELS (SEE SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS AND ENERGY PROGRAM FOR MORE DETAILS), AS WELL AS A BRIEFING FEATURING SALT LAKE CITY MAYOR RALPH BECKER (AMONG OTHERS) ON THE VERY POSITIVE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF INVESTMENTS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. WE RELEASED A FACT SHEET ON PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SHOWCASING THEIR RISING MARKET SHARE.MAKING COMMUNITIES MORE SUSTAINABLE PERMEATES MUCH OF EESI'S WORK, PARTICULARLY OUR STRONG FOCUS ON RESILIENCY ISSUES. A COMMUNITY THAT IS NOT RESILIENT CANNOT BE SUSTAINABLE. WE HELD A SERIES OF FOUR BRIEFINGS EXAMINING WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MAKE SPECIFIC REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES MORE RESILIENT TO CLIMATE IMPACTS. WE ALSO HELD A BRIEFING ON SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS AND PARTNERSHIPS--SUCH AS THE NATIONAL DISASTER RESILIENCE COMPETITION--WHICH ARE DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE, EFFECTIVE APPROACHES TO MAXIMIZING ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESILIENCY WHEN INVESTING PUBLIC FUNDS IN LOCAL RECOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT. A KEY PART OF COMMUNITY RESILIENCE IS MAXIMIZING THE ABILITY FOR ELECTRIC POWER TO REMAIN ON, ESPECIALLY DURING EMERGENCIES. TWO EESI BRIEFINGS LOOKED AT ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION ISSUES IN DETAIL, INCLUDING A BRIEFING SPECIFICALLY ON INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES THAT CAN STRENGTHEN THE ELECTRIC GRID. ALSO KEY TO SUSTAINABILITY IS RECYCLING. IN AN EARTH DAY BRIEFING, ORGANIZED WITH SUPPORT FROM SENATOR TOM CARPER'S OFFICE, EESI GAVE AN OVERVIEW OF RECYCLING AT THE LOCAL LEVEL (INCLUDING RECYCLING OF ORGANIC MATTER, BUILDING MATERIALS, AND ELECTRONIC WASTE).
