Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Eesi was formed more than 30 years ago as an independent not-for-profit organization by a bipartisan group of members of congress, including founder and board member, former representative richard ottinger (d-ny), who identified a need for policymakers to have greater access to fact-based information on energy and environmental issues, and created eesi to fill it. Today, eesi continues to be a trusted source of non-partisan information and innovative, common-sense approaches to energy, climate, transportation, and related policies. As part of its work, eesi conducts congressional briefings, produces fact sheets, and publishes free weekly newsletters ("climate change news and "sustainable bioenergy, farms, and forest"). All of these resources are available via e-mail and on our website, www.eesi.org.

Educate policymakers about science-based solutions for climate change, energy, and the environment.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The processes have not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Eesi is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (the code), except as to income from unrelated business activities, and has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a private foundation within the meaning of section 509(a) of the code. Eesi requires that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more-likely-than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. Eesi does not believe its financial statements include, or reflect, any uncertain tax positions. Eesi's irs form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, is subject to examination by the federal and state authorities, generally for three years after filing.
