IRS990/Desc0THE MDA ORGANIZATION IS ENGAGED IN PROVIDING NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION AND MEDIA COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS AS WELL AS, MARKETING PROMOTIONAL PROGRAMS FOR THE DAIRY INDUSTRY AS MANDATED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. MDA PROVIDES NUMEROUS PROGRAM SERVICES ESPECIALLY WITHIN SCHOOLS, SOME OF WHICH INCLUDE: THE NEW LOOK OF SCHOOL MILK- NLSM PROGRAM IS A DRIVING FORCE OF OUR SCHOOL FOODSERVICE INITIATIVES AND CONTINUES TO GROW IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION. IN 2015, 29 SCHOOL DISTRICTS WERE ADDED AND 141 ADDITIONAL SCHOOLS CONVERTED FROM SERVING MILK IN CARDBOARD CARTONS TO SERVING IT IN PLASTIC BOTTLES. TOTAL SCHOOL ENROLLMENT WAS 62,650 STUDENTS. CURRENTLY, 16 PROCESSORS IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION PACKAGE MILK IN EIGHT-OUNCE PLASTIC BOTTLES FOR SCHOOLS, AND OF THE MORE THAN 400 MILLION STUDENTS IN THE REGION, 34 PERCENT DRINK MILK FROM A PLASTIC BOTTLE EVERY DAY. THESE EFFORTS HELP GIVE STUDENTS NUTRITION VIA MILK THE WAY THEY WANT - IN VARIOUS LOW-FAT FLAVORS AND SERVED COLD IN CONTEMPORARY, EASY-TO-OPEN PACKAGING. MILK REWARDS PROGRAM- THROUGH A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH VENDORS, SCHOOLS CAN EARN "POINTS" FOR EVERY 8OZ BOTTLE OF MILK SOLD IN THEIR PROGRAMS. CREATED BY MDA THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES FUNDING FOR "POINTS" GENERATED THROUGH THE USE OF DAIRY PRODUCTS OFFERING AN OPPORTUNITY TO ADD DAIRY MENU ITEMS TO SCHOOL'S CURRENT MEAL PROGRAMS, ENHANCING DAIRY IN BOTH BREAKFAST AND LUNCH. IN 2015, 45 SCHOOL DISTRICTS, 1,079 SCHOOLS, PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM WHICH BENEFITS OVER 700,000 STUDENTS. SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAMS- MDA HAS PLACED GREAT EMPHASIS ON OUR "EXPANDING BREAKFAST" PROGRAM IN THE SCHOOLS. MID-ATLANTIC DAIRY ASSOCIATION'S BREAKFAST PROGRAMS ARE NOW IN MORE THAN 1,500 SCHOOLS. A TYPICAL BREAKFAST INCLUDES MILK, FRUIT, PROTEIN AND/OR CEREAL OR BREAD. THE PROGRAMS RANGE FROM "BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM" WHERE IN 2015, 2,931 BREAKFAST BAGS AND COOLERS WERE PLACED IN THE CLASSROOM WITHIN 25 DISTRICTS, 450 SCHOOLS (NOTE-EACH BREAKFAST BAG FEEDS 30 STUDENTS FOR 180 DAYS PROVIDING 5400 MEALS PER SCHOOL YEAR); TO "GRAB AND GO" BREAKFAST OPTIONS SERVED IN RECYCLABLE BAGS (194,010 ADDITIONAL PLACED IN 2015); TO "BREAKFAST AFTER FIRST PERIOD ; TO "BREAKFAST IN THE HALLWAY" FOR HIGH SCHOOLS; AND ANOTHER AS "DAIRY CONNECTION" CART STATIONS WHICH ARE NEW WAYS TO DELIVER A NUTRITIOUS BREAKFAST OUTSIDE OF THE TRADITIONAL CAFETERIA. A TOTAL OF 110 CARTS WERE PLACED IN 2015.IN ADDITION, MDA INITIATED IN SEPTEMBER 2015 A SMOOTHIE PROGRAM IN SCHOOLS IN OUR REGION. MDA TOOK THE LEAD ON EXPANDING THE AVAILABILITY OF THIS HEALTHY BEVERAGE IN OUR SCHOOLS UTILIZING MILK AND YOGURT, BY OFFERING A COMPETITIVE GRANT AND AWARDING HIGH-CAPACITY, INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH SMOOTHIE BLENDERS TO SCHOOLS LOOKING TO IMPLEMENT OR EXPAND A CURRENT SMOOTHIE PROGRAM. THE MDA SMOOTHIE GRANT OFFERS THE ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT AND MARKETING MATERIALS TO IMPLEMENT A SUSTAINABLE, DAIRY-BASED SMOOTHIE PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH A WELL-BALANCED MEAL THAT FOLLOWS CURRENT FOOD SERVICE TRENDS AND COMPLIES WITH FEDERAL SCHOOL MEAL PATTERNS. TO DATE, 125 BLENDERS HAVE BEEN SHIPPED TO 120 SCHOOLS IN 76 DISTRICTS PLUS 35 DISTRICTS ARE UNDERWAY AND REPORTING DATA. FUEL UP TO PLAY60 PROGRAM - (FUTP60) IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NATIONAL DAIRY COUNCIL, NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE AND U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TO EMPOWER STUDENTS TO MAKE CHANGES AT SCHOOL THAT WILL HELP THEM BE ACTIVE FOR 60 MINUTES DAILY AND FUEL UP WITH NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS INCLUDING LOW-FAT AND FAT-FREE DAIRY. THIS PROGRAM IS AN EFFORT TO ADDRESS THE PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE IN OUR COUNTRY OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY AND TO HELP IMPROVE THE NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ENVIRONMENT IN SCHOOLS.
