Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

This is the first time a 990 is required by New Expressive Works as our gross income increased during 2020. So the method to review this 990 is through using the past the 990-EZ documentation, our 2020 income and expenditure statements, our monthly bank statements, and a review by the Board Secretary/Treasurer before full board sign-off and approval of this 990 form.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

We have presented documents when we apply for grants. Otherwise we have not been requested to present our documents to the public.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

PORTLAND AREA ARTIST EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND - Due to COVID closures, NEW provided a one time program to meet the growing needs for artists in the Portland area because of ongoing health and economic crisis. It benefitted artists residing in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas. Our community of fund recipients is a truly diverse population which includes but is not limited to diversity of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, disability status, and age. In summary, we have raised $179,004.00 in donated funds to 405 independent/freelance artists in our region.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

Due to COVID, from March 13th 2020, our spaces had to be fully shuttered through September. Starting September we steadily started rehearsals(low cost $10 - $15 per hour) for artists and organizations we already have relationships with. We then began offering mini-residencies for artists who were needing safe space to keep creating work. The ups and downs of our County constantly being deemed high-risk coupled with continued COVID guidelines changing did not allow for us to use our space fully the way we used to in the past.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0This was a ONE TIME relief grant service offered as the Portland Area Artist Emergency Relief Fund. The requirement was need based for independent artists in the tri-county area of Portland (Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties) who, due to COVID, had lost already scheduled performances, gallery events, and any paying opportunities due to the lockdown between March 15th 2020 and December 30th 2020. As a special program for COVID times, this grant program is not expected to be repeated in the near future. We maintain records of all the applications sent (651) and all the individuals and fiscally sponsored arts collectives who received grants. Those who received more than $600 received 1099-NECs.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0PORTLAND AREA ARTIST EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND - Due to COVID closures, NEW provided a one time program to meet the growing needs for artists in the Portland area because of ongoing health and economic crisis.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Due to COVID, from March 13th 2020, our spaces had to be fully shuttered through September.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The Secretary, Scott H Forbes, is married to the Founder and Executive Director, Subashini Ganesan.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3This is the first time a 990 is required by New Expressive Works as our gross income increased during 2020. So the method to review this 990 is through using the past the 990-EZ documentation, our 2020 income and expenditure statements, our monthly bank statements, and a review by the Board Secretary/Treasurer before full board sign-off and approval of this 990 form.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4We have presented documents when we apply for grants. Otherwise we have not been requested to present our documents to the public.
