“The policy of the organization is to make its articles of incorporation, bylaws, and conflict of interest policy, available upon request.”
“Portal expanded the scope of it's grant-making to include earthquake emergency assistance as well as assistance for the reconstruction of transitional and long term housing to help people get their lives back together.”
“Immediate response to the earthquake by providing tarps, cgi sheets, lanterns, solar charging stations, blankets, and personal hygiene items to villagers in quake affected areas. We quickly identified that shelter was a significant need and provided funds for the construction of hundreds of transitional shelters. Our executive director, caleb spear, developed an open source, rapidly deployable shelter design that was made available to individuals and organizations responding to the earthquake. This open source design was utilized by hundreds of organizations to built thousands more shelters for affected families. This was an incredible testament to the strengths of a small but nimble organization, as well as social media and open source platforms, all of which allowed portal to make a much larger impact in response to this natural disaster than would have traditionally been possible. We estimate that somewhere between 10 and 15 thousand shelters have been built using the open source design developed by portal. With an average of over 5 people per household in nepal, this project provided transitional shelter for 50 to 75 thousand people. Another contributing factor to the success of this project was the fact that caleb and his family live in nepal and were there when the earthquake struck. This allowed portal to respond immediately and effectively to the earthquake in an innovative way that made a significant impact. In addition to the earthquake response, portal worked to establish a supply chain capable of providing the portal cargo bike to a greater number of people around the globe. Design and procurement assistance was provided pro-bono from gsd global, a design firm we partnered with in 2014. We also returned to the 2015 interbike bicycle trade show where our work was presented before an attending audience of over 25,000. We forged fantastic partnerships with that bike show as well as momentum magazine, both of which featured our work through their media platforms. The core of portals work is "transforming lives and communities by creating pathways out of poverty. While our mission is bicycle centric, we feel that our work during the earthquake response aligned with our core as we helped people rebuild their lives, allowing them to return to their work and their businesses having a much better chance of escaping poverty than they would while living under a tent. Though 2015 brought a significant delay to the development of our bicycle project, it was a year of incredible impact in the lives of thousands of nepalis whose lives were forever changed by the earthquake.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | PORTAL CONTINUED ITS WORK HELPING PEOPLE CREATE PATHWAYS OUT OF POVERTY IN NEPAL. BETWEEN JANUARY AND APRIL, WE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP OUR BICYCLE PROJECT, MANUFACTURING AND SELLING LIFE-CHANGING BICYCLES TO PEOPLE LOCATED IN AND AROUND KATHMANDU NEPAL. WE SAW A VERY POSITIVE RECEPTION TO THESE BIKES AS OUR PROJECT GREW, WITH MANY PEOPLE USING THEIR PORTAL CARGO BIKES TO EXPAND THEIR BUSINESSES. THESE PORTAL ENTREPRENEURS CONSISTENTLY REPORTED HIGHER INCOMES, EASIER WORK DAYS, AND A GENERAL SENSE OF IMPROVED WELLBEING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES AFTER PURCHASING THE BICYCLES. IN LATE APRIL, A MAGNITUDE 7.8 EARTHQUAKE STRUCK NEPAL, KILLING 8,000 AND DESTROYING AND DAMAGING THE HOMES OF MILLIONS. PORTAL SUPPORTED AN IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO THE EARTHQUAKE BY PROVIDING TARPS, CGI SHEETS, LANTERNS, SOLAR CHARGING STATIONS, BLANKETS, AND PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS TO VILLAGERS IN QUAKE AFFECTED AREAS. | IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | PORTAL EXPANDED THE SCOPE OF IT'S GRANT-MAKING TO INCLUDE EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE AS WELL AS ASSISTANCE FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF TRANSITIONAL AND LONG TERM HOUSING TO HELP PEOPLE GET THEIR LIVES BACK TOGETHER. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO THE EARTHQUAKE BY PROVIDING TARPS, CGI SHEETS, LANTERNS, SOLAR CHARGING STATIONS, BLANKETS, AND PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS TO VILLAGERS IN QUAKE AFFECTED AREAS. THOUGH 2015 BROUGHT A SIGNIFICANT DELAY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR BICYCLE PROJECT, IT WAS A YEAR OF INCREDIBLE IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF NEPALIS WHOSE LIVES WERE FOREVER CHANGED BY THE EARTHQUAKE. |
