Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

It is the responsibility of each director, officer, employee, and member of a committee with board-delegated powers to discharge his or her duties as a director, officer, employee, or committee member in good faith, in a manner the person reasonably believes to be in the best interests of Roots for the Home Team, and with the care an ordinarily prudent person in a like position would exercise under similar circumstances. Duty to Disclose In connection with any actual or possible conflicts of interest, an Interested Person must disclose the existence and nature of his or her Financial Interest or Fiduciary Responsibility and all material facts to the directors and members of committees with board-delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangements. Determining Whether a Conflict of Interest Exists After disclosure of the Financial Interest or Fiduciary Responsibility and all material facts, and after any discussion with the Interested Person, he or she shall leave the board or committee meeting while the final determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board or committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. Violations of the Conflicts of Interest Policy If the board or committee determines that the Interested Person has in fact failed to discharge his or her duties in accordance with this policy or to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, it shall take appropriate disciplinary and corrective actions.

The Executive Director's role encompasses multiple responsibilities, including program design, growth and content; business planning; education and training of youth; program logistics and operation; community outreach and partnership development; development and fundraising; and public and media relations and marketing. Compensation for the Executive Director is approved by the Board of Directors as part of the budget process and is documented in the board minutes.

Our young people continue to ask for new opportunities within Roots. This past year we initiated the formation of 3 promoted leadership roles within Roots: 1) Youth Advisory Council, 2) Cart Captains and 3) Co-facilitators of our workshops. These three entities offer our youth new ways to practice their leadership skills, entrepreneurial skills and enable them to discover more about their capabilities and interests. The initiatives introduce them to new people which helps them grow their network and these roles mean they can contribute toward Roots' mission, mentor younger participants and serve as a compass to our program. They will help us grow the relevance and influence of our work.

IRS990/Desc0Roots for the Home Team is an innovative, youth driven leadership and entrepreneurial program that's mission is to nourish young people's appetites to discover new possibilities and pathways for success through unique opportunities. We partner with local youth garden programs, buy produce the teens grow as ingredients, partner our teens with local chefs to create innovative salad recipes, and employ the youth to run a food business at MLB games. (Continued on Schedule O)Over our past 11 years, Roots has grown to be significantly more than a salad enterprise. Through these challenging experiences and our University of Minnesota-created leadership curriculum, BIPOC teen participants gain valuable business and entrepreneurial skills, learn more about who they are and what they care about, then, because of that, discover new possibilities and pathways toward their future and career interests.In 2021 Roots: Prepared salads weekly to distribute to 10 community organizations who benefitted from nourishing foods. Returned to Target Field to sell salads to fans. Began the work to create 3 promoted leadership roles for youth within Roots Created new ways for supporting our youth who are challenged by food insecurity, homelessness and family demands. Offered mini-scholarships for youth to explore their career or personal growth interests.We employed 40 youth participants with 30 teens participating in intensive programming.Six new recipes were created by the youth. More than 13,000 salads were prepared and served to the community. 100% of participants learned how to set goals for themselves; 95% feel they are able to recognize opportunities for personal growth; 95% know of skills they can acquire to help prepare themselves for the future and career they want; 85% have a vision of what they want their future to be and know actions to bring it to life and 90% of those youth feel they have new opportunities to influence their future and community. Youth demographics, 31% Latinx, 24% Somali; 17% Hmong, 17% Black, 3% Caucasian; 7% Other.

This past year we initiated the formation of 3 promoted leadership roles within Roots: 1) Youth Advisory Council, 2) Cart Captains and 3) Co-facilitators of our workshops. These three entities offer our youth new ways to practice their leadership skills, entrepreneurial skills and enable them to discover more about their capabilities and interests. The initiatives introduce them to new people which helps them grow their network and these roles mean they can contribute toward Roots' mission, mentor younger participants and serve as a compass to our program. They will help us grow the relevance and influence of our work.

Duty to Disclose In connection with any actual or possible conflicts of interest, an Interested Person must disclose the existence and nature of his or her Financial Interest or Fiduciary Responsibility and all material facts to the directors and members of committees with board-delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangements. Determining Whether a Conflict of Interest Exists After disclosure of the Financial Interest or Fiduciary Responsibility and all material facts, and after any discussion with the Interested Person, he or she shall leave the board or committee meeting while the final determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board or committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. Violations of the Conflicts of Interest Policy If the board or committee determines that the Interested Person has in fact failed to discharge his or her duties in accordance with this policy or to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, it shall take appropriate disciplinary and corrective actions.
