Roots for the Home Team helps youth build leadership and business skills while fostering a personal and community interest in healthful foods.

| Roots for the Home Team (RFHT) is designed to create a meaningful and sustainable engagement with youth to help enhance their lives through eating healthfully and developing business and life skills, which can further their lives. It is structured to offer youth unique opportunities to grow their personal capabilities and confidence while planting ideas and "seeds" for their adult life and professional aspirations. It does so in an untraditional educational way by putting new experiences in front of youth and giving them the encouragement and support to accept and dig into the experiences. It also helps dispel the perception that youth shun vegetables and that healthful foods are less palatable. RFHT accomplishes its mission through the following strategies:*Partner with youth garden programs in challenged urban areas to purchase vegetables and herbs they have planted, tended and harvested. *Use youth-grown vegetables and herbs as ingredients for salad dishes sold at Minnesota Twins baseball games and TCF Bank Stadium Gopher Football games.*Collaborate with the youth in garden programs to develop recipes for the salads sold at the ballpark and stadium, as well as other locations.*Hire youth from the garden programs to sell the salads from the Roots for the Home Team food cart at designated Twins games and Gopher football games.*Offer youth and leaders in the garden programs training in recipe development, food safety, sales and marketing plus harvesting and packing of produce for commercial sale.*Create additional opportunities for the youth to learn about business, career opportunities and communication, media skills.*Create media interest in the Roots story to encourage sports fans to purchase Roots for the Home Team salads - thus exposing them to the story of youth who are interested in growing food; youth who are interested in vegetables; youth who create tasty recipes from the foods they grow; youth who eagerly eat vegetables. Baseball season melds perfectly with the growing season in Minnesota. Target Field serves as the perfect venue for showcasing the benefits of youth garden programs. This venue gives youth in these programs significant exposure to talk about their work while giving thousands of baseball fans a chance to choose fresh, healthful foods at a game - something that's in short supply in most major league ballparks. RFHT also demonstrates to youth and adults at the game that kids like vegetables and will eagerly eat them - thereby changing common beliefs people have about kids and healthy eating. RFHT showcases competent, "cool" teens creating and selling cool vegetables. The youth in these garden programs become role models to youth across the Twin Cities. RFHT has a network of professionals from multiple industries who collaborate with the program to help it grow and increase its capacity. Experts include a food distributor, chefs, food stylists, public relations experts, media trainers, farmers, food safety trainers, lawyers and a member of the Twins baseball team.2016 Highlights:*254 youth participants*Youth participants represent diverse ethnicities: 18% African American, 25% Native American, 6% Asian, 7% Multi-racial, 13% Hispanic, 15% Caucasian, 16% unreported*Outreach increased 58% to include TCF Bank Stadium Gopher Football games, Minneapolis Public Schools, The Wedge Table, Kowalski's Markets, Breaking Bread Cafe and Izzy's Ice Cream stores*Developed 8 new salad recipes*1,600+ salads sold and 9,600+ samples served*Grew 485+ pounds of produce.*Completed a program evaluation conducted by the University of Minnesota. | $0 | $97,582 |
