Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The treasurer of the organization distributes a pdf copy of the 990 return to all board members for review and comment prior to being filed. At the first meeting of the board following the filing of the 990 with the irs, the complete form 990 is presented to the board by the organizations lead officers with responsibility over the form 990s review thereafter, questions are taken and the form, its preparation, and its public relation impact is discussed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

At each board and committee meeting, if there is a discussion of selecting or engaging a vendor or service provider, all in attendance are asked to recuse themselves from this discussion if there could be a perceived conflict. Annually, the organization reviews and discusses the conflict of interest policy and requests that each board member list and acknowledge any known conflicts.

The executive committee reviews the compensation for the executive director by comparing their compensation to the compensation of individuals in like positions, in comparable organizations using forms 990, compensation studies, and other available data. 2 the first place transition academy four four-bedroom suites for young adults with autism, modeled after the celebrated taft transition to independent living program which has saved the state of california hundreds of millions of dollars. 3 the first place leadership institute representing a faculty of luminaries from across the country, focused on pressing concerns that open doors to more housing and independent living options for individuals with special needs. Five centers within the leadership institute facilitate the critical work and impact of first place and include centers for training/education, real estate, research, expression, and public policy.

Pbs newshour produced two nationally broadcasted segments that showcase the important work underway in phoenix, representing two of their most popular stories of 2016 and generating interest from around the world. Fpaz currently produces a 34-course curriculum for first place transition academy students, focused on life-skills development, career readiness and interpersonal skills. Courses now taught at gateway community college in phoenix will be available this fall to other special learners at gateway. Fpaz is developing a 360 health wellness curriculum. Through our collaboration with autism speaks and the autistic global initiative, asu now offers an online curriculum to train direct-support service providers the lack of trained providers is a major impediment to creating more housing and community-life options.

Working with fsl and other affordable housing developers on creating new properties similar to our beta site, opening the door to more housing options. 2 center for research underway on a national institutes of health grant in collaboration with sarrc, focused on results from the first place transition academy. Engaged in meetings and active discussions with asu and aj drexel about research and data collection opportunities that position first place and its collaborating partners very well for social impact bonds and other grants. 3 center for education, training employment first place is currently producing a 34-course curriculum for first place transition academy students, focused on life-skills development, career readiness and interpersonal skills. Government accountability office hosted two panels in washington, d.c. Focused on the challenges of transitioning adolescents and adults with autism. Four first place leaders served on these panels. Two also served on the arizona asd autism spectrum disorder advisory committee, which submitted its report to arizona governor doug ducey.

COURSES ARE NOW BEING TAUGHT AT GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN PHOENIX AND WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS FALL TO OTHER SPECIAL LEARNERS AT GATEWAY. FIRST PLACE IS ALSO DEVELOPING A 360 HEALTH WELLNESS CURRICULUM. THROUGH OUR COLLABORATION WITH AUTISM SPEAKS AND THE AUTISTIC GLOBAL INITIATIVE, ASU IS NOW OFFERING AN ONLINE CURRICULUM TO TRAIN DIRECT-SUPPORT SERVICE PROVIDERS THE LACK OF TRAINED PROVIDERS IS A MAJOR IMPEDIMENT TO CREATING MORE HOUSING AND COMMUNITY-LIFE OPTIONS. 4 CENTER FOR EXPRESSION A YOUNG LEADERS SUMMIT IS BEING ORGANIZED FOR FALL 2016, INVOLVING THE FACULTY AND STUDENTS OF ASU S WALTER CRONKITE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION WHO WILL HELP YOUNG LEADERS WITH AUTISM TELL THEIR STORIES AND ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES, AS WELL AS PROMOTE AWARENESS OF THE ISSUE THROUGH SOCIAL AND TRADITIONAL MEDIA. 5 CENTER FOR PUBLIC POLICY IN RESPONSE TO A REQUEST FROM CONGRESS, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE HOSTED TWO PANELS IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
