Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Nick cienski and sandi cienski are married: family relationship

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

The organization does not have committees.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The organization did not provide a final copy of this form 990 to its board of directors before filing the form. However, the board meets on a regular basis to review the financial records from which the form 990 is prepared. The final form 990, as filed, will be e-mailed to the board upon completion, and is always available for review upon request.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The conflict of interest policy uniformly applies to all directors, officers and employees of the organization who may have a direct or indirect "financial interest". Mission 14's board of directors administers and interprets the policy and reviews it periodically for adequacy. The periodic reviews include whether compensation arrangements and benefits are reasonable and the result of arm's length bargaining; and whether any partnerships, joint ventures and related relationships conform to mission 14's written policies, are properly recorded, reflect reasonable terms, further its charitable purposes and do not result in inurement, impermissible private benefit or an excess benefit transaction. After disclosure of the financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the individual, the board of directors determines whether a conflict of interest exists. The individual who is involved is excused from the meeting and does not participate in the deliberations. If the board determines a conflict exists, the individual is given an opportunity to explain the alleged failure to disclose. If, after hearing the response and after making further investigation as warranted by the circumstances, the board of directors determines the individual has failed to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, it shall take appropriate disciplinary and corrective action.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents and financial records are available for public inspection upon request.

IRS990/Desc0IN 2019, MISSION 14 CONTINUED TO FOCUS ON ATTRACTING A GLOBAL AUDIENCE TO DRIVE ACTION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND THE SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN. WE WORKED ALONGSIDE BRAVE NONPROFITS WHO HAVE ESTABLISHED BEST PRACTICES TO HELP COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING, AND THE VARIETY OF ARENAS CAUSING AND AFFECTING THE TRAFFICKING SYSTEM, BOTH HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER REGIONS AROUND THE GLOBE.SEWING CENTERWE ARE COMMITTED TO WORKING WITH LOCAL NGO'S WHO SHARE OUR PASSION TO BRING JOB RELATED SKILLS TO IMPOVERISHED COMMUNITIES IN NICARAGUA. OUR PARTNERSHIP CONTINUED TO GROW WITH ORPHANETWORK, A LOCAL NGO, HELPING TO SUPPORT THE SEWING CENTER IN ITS FOURTH FULL YEAR AS ITS OWN NGO IN NICARAGUA. THE SEWING CENTER CONTINUED TO PROVIDE TRAINING COURSES TO OFFER INDIVIDUAL SKILLS TRAINING ON OPERATING SEWING MACHINES AND PUTTING GARMENTS TOGETHER. THIS COURSE WAS DEVELOPED BY THE CENTER MANAGER WHO PARTNERED WITH ANOTHER ORGANIZATION AS WELL AS LOCAL FACTORY OWNERS TO IDENTIFY THE SPECIFIC NEEDS THEY WERE LOOKING FOR IN THEIR WORKFORCE. IN 2019 THE SEWING CENTER HELD 8 FIVE-WEEK TRAINING COURSES AND HAD 145 STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM OUR PROGRAM. OUR FOCUS IS NOT JUST TO TEACH PEOPLE FROM AT-RISK NEIGHBORHOODS A SKILL, BUT TO SEE THEM GAIN MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE CLASS. WE SAW 95% OF OUR GRADUATES PLACED IN REAL JOBS AT LOCAL APPAREL MANUFACTURING FACILITIES, THUS BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY IN THEIR LIVES.HUMAN TRAFFICKING SEMINARSLAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ARE THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST MODERN DAY SLAVERY BUT WITHOUT EFFECTIVE TRAINING, THEY ARE ILL-EQUIPPED. WITH LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT BUDGET CUTS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING AND A LACK OF HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING ISSUES, OUR OFFICERS FIGHT A LOSING BATTLE. IN MARCH, MISSION 14, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE OF CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION, BALTIMORE CITY MAYOR'S OFFICE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, HELD THE FOURTH ANNUAL 3-DAY HUMAN TRAFFICKING TRAINING FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT IN OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND. THIS CONFERENCE HAS GROWN EACH YEAR AND DRAWS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FROM MANY STATES ACROSS THE U.S. WE ALSO PROVIDED BEVERAGE SUPPORT FOR THE MARYLAND CHILD TRAFFICKING CONFERENCE HELD AT TOWSON UNIVERSITY. WITH GREAT SUCCESS FROM ITS INAUGURAL LAST YEAR, MISSION 14 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE OF CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION, BALTIMORE CITY MAYOR'S OFFICE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY'S OFFICE HELD THE SECOND ANNUAL 3-DAY HUMAN TRAFFICKING PROFESSIONALS SEMINAR (VICTIM SERVICE PROVIDERS, SOCIAL WORKERS). THIS CONFERENCE IS OFFERED IN OCTOBER AND IS GEARED TOWARD ADDRESSING THE NEEDS FOR PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING. THIS TRAINING IS OFFERED AT NO COST TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY BECAUSE OF GENEROUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM CORPORATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS. WE HAVE STARTED THE 'ADOPT-A-COP' PROGRAM THAT WILL ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IN PROVIDING THESE TRAINING SEMINARS.POLICE SOFT ROOMSIN SPRING 2019, MISSION 14 COMPLETED THE WORK ON CREATING A POLICE SOFT ROOM FOR THE HOWARD COUNTY HUMAN TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATORS POLICE FORCE.
