Mobile arts therapy program
| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| ArtVan is a mobile arts therapy program with a mission to provide a creative, collaborative environment to encourage youth with little or no arts access to fully express their imaginations, relationships and experiences within themselves, among their peers and across our communities. Art therapy is at the core of our programmatic work and is provided by professional art therapists and teaching artists who build trust and relational ties at no cost to the youth served. ArtVans hands-on projects plant seeds for imaginative growth, allowing children and teens the time, materials and support to create and explore ideas, resulting in increased self-esteem, healthier outlooks, increased awareness of the wider world, and more successful integration into larger communities. Artistic relationships offer grounds for neighborhood youth, families, and community members to move forward with open minds and new skills to solve conflicts and to make an impact. ArtVans Neighborhood Program began in Bath, ME in 2004. From 2006 to 2007, ArtVan expanded to Perryman Village (Brunswick), Lewiston Public Library, Broadview Acres and Family Development (Auburn), and Bacon Street (Biddeford). Last year, ArtVan served over 540 youth and their families through our Neighborhood Program. Programs were conducted weekly and consistently in Bath, Brunswick, Lewiston and Auburn. Over the past two years, ArtVan has been developing its Community Partnership Program (CPP). The CPP allows ArtVan to take its successful on-site, therapeutic arts model and adapt it to serve other vulnerable populations, including the elderly. Through this program, ArtVan partners with agencies who share a similar mission and vision for a one-time or on-going therapeutic arts experience. Currently, ArtVan is partnering with the Center for Womens Wisdom (Lewiston), NFI North- Stetson and Olivers Place, and the Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging. ArtVan incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 2011 and has since been building up its nonprofit operational model to best meet the needs of its constituents while creating a firm base of operations. Over the past six years, ArtVan has experimented with building its program to include more programming and additional staff. This model was difficult to maintain financially, and ArtVan has recently retracted to reflect a more sustainable model for moving forward with a focus on delivering its core Neighborhood Program work, while expanding its Community Partnership Program to reach additional vulnerable populations. This model has provided ArtVan with a solid base of operations, a diverse funding stream, stable community relations and support, and secure standards toward success.ArtVan is currently in year two of a three-year strategic planning process. With a focus on sustainability, ArtVan has retracted operations in 2016 to reflect a diversity of funding and weaning itself of grant funding dependency. ArtVan supported a larger staff in 2016, and the payroll obligation became too much to sustain for a small nonprofit. Operations we scaled back in the fourth quarter of 2016 to create a sustainable base of operations for moving forward, with a commitment to staying on mission with the Neighborhood Program and the emerging Community Partnership Program. Even with the retraction of programming in 2016, ArtVan was able to complete the year in the black and roll over enough funding to prime 2017. ArtVan also had a successful end-of-year appeal, raising double the funds of the previous year. | $98,889 | - |
