Mobile arts therapy program

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
ArtVan is a mobile arts therapy program with a mission to provide a creative, collaborative environment to encourage youth with little or no arts access to fully express their imaginations, relationships and experiences within themselves, among their peers and across our communities. Art therapy is at the core of our programmatic work and is provided by three professional on-staff art therapists who build trust and relational ties. At no cost to youth, ArtVans hands-on projects plant seeds for imaginative growth, allowing children and teens time, materials, and support to create and explore ideas, resulting in increased self-esteem, healthier outlooks, more awareness of the wider world, and more successful integration into larger communities. Artistic relationships offer grounds for neighborhood youth, families, and community members to move forward with open minds and new skills to solve conflicts and to make an impact.ArtVans Core Neighborhood Program began in Bath in 2004. From 2006 to 2007, ArtVan expanded to Perryman Village (Brunswick), Lewiston Public Library, Broadview Acres and Family Development (Auburn), and Bacon Street (Biddeford). Last year, over 540 youth and their families were served by our Core Neighborhood Program on a weekly basis in Bath, Brunswick, Lewiston and Auburn.ArtVan also has established a Fee for Service program for organizations and institutions who want to incorporate our art therapy expertise in their service delivery to clients. Through this program, we partner with agencies who share a similar mission and vision for one time or ongoing art experiences. After working eight years under fiscal-sponsor relationships, ArtVan incorporated as an independent organization in 2011 and began to redefine its mission, establish a Board, and develop infrastructure components, receiving 501(c)3 status in December 2012. Through this transition, ArtVan sustained programming to change lives one youth at a time, one work of art at a time. In these past three years, we have grown in our knowledge of non-profit management and developed staff whose expertise fit the unique needs of our work and mission. This history provides ArtVan with a solid base of non-profit management, stable community relationships, and secure standards towards success. After conducting a strategic plan in late 2014, ArtVan rolled into 2015 with new operational and programmatic goals. We successfully secured funding to implement Get Green Rolling programs in our Core Neighborhood Program, where we partnered with local nonprofits to provide environmental education and non-clinical art therapy to youth. This program will continue in winter/spring 2016. ArtVan has also grown in terms of staff capacity; with the addition of a VISTA Outreach Coordinator and an Associate Director of Art Therapy, we have been able to expand our program evaluation, social media, volunteer coordination and Fee for Service Programs. Our Associate Director of Art Therapy is specifically working to grow the number of Fee for Service programs, with the goal to provide more services to new populations and generate self-sustaining income for ArtVan. As part of the decision to hire for this position, our Executive Director and Founder decided to be paid for half of her time worked in 2015 and donate the rest in-kind as an investment in the growth of this new program. We anticipate that she will donate a decreasing portion of her salary in the years to come. Finally, ArtVan ended the year in a strong financial position after a fundraising campaign to purchase a new van. Our current van is in need of replacement and we are very grateful for the donors, foundations and businesses who have supported our fundraising efforts. We plan to purchase the new van in early 2016, which why our 2015 end of year income is so high. Please consult our website (artvanprogram.org) for more information.$106,810-
