Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Since its inception in 1991, Fotokids (originally under our prior fiscal sponsor, the San Carlos Foundation) has utilized photography, graphic design and media technology as tools for self-expression, creativity, leadership and vocational training experience with hundreds of youths from poor rural and urban areas. The majority of our students, in addition to learning employable skills with Fotokids, receive scholarships to study in formal schools from the level of primary education through university.

For twenty years, Fotokids originally under our fiscal sponsor the San Carlos Foundation has used photography, graphic design and media technology as a tool for self-expression, creativity, leadership and vocational training experience to hundreds of youths from poor rural and urban areas. The majority of our students, in addition to learning employable skills with Fotokids, receive scholarships to study in traditional schools from primary education through university.

Primary and middle school Fotokids classes Believing that it is essential to reach the children and formulate values before they are recruited by gangs Fotokids is adding 2 new classes for 4th to 6th graders in 2 dangerous barrios of Guatemala City,Santa Fe, and Tierra Nueva. In Tierra Nueva our primary school program works with 60 children ages 9 thru 13 many of whose fathers were bus drivers assassinated during gang extortions. Since 2006 there have been over 500 bus drivers murdered. The class of 7- 11 year olds is taught by Marta Lopez, an original member of Fotokids (since the age of 5) who received her degree in education from the University del Valle. Marta now works during the week in educational outreach with a local non-profit, the Paiz Foundation. Our middle school group participated in the Adobe Youth Voices Program and each has profited from video training and created their own videos.$51,801$51,801
Santiago Atitlán- 1997 to present Our program in this poverty stricken Tzutuhil village began in 1997 as part of the above Under the Shadows project, that examined the effects of the war years on children in rural communities around the country. Some of the students who took part in the original program now work for the Commission on Human Rights and study journalism and law in university. Others, who received training in photography, digital story development and graphic design, went on to work for the organization's design studio, Jakaramba! Additional Tzutuhil Fotokids graduates serve as teachers in Santiago Atitlán, training young students from primary school onwards in the basics of photography, Photoshop and graphic design and critical thinking. They are part of the Fotokids scholarship program. Santiago Atitlán Fotokids has worked in this poor indigenous community since 1997. This year the students worked with international photography mentors to build up their portfolios and produced labels and logos for a local indigneous coffee cooperative. They continue to study contemporary art history and Adobe Illustrator and Indesign. A new program was added with 20-30 additional children (5th and sixth graders) who are studying the ecology of Lake Atitlan and trained as proactive leaders to spread environmental education. We presently work with 65 children$49,500$49,500
Fotokids programs for graduates and interns in design, photography, and video. This programs works withour teachers and graduates ot provide advanced professional training to be used in tecahing the younger students. Save Girls 2006-to present Saving Girls began as a three-year program whose mission was to provide young women with the confidence, life skills and vocational training needed to effectively insulate them against the violence and poverty that characterize their gang-ridden communities in the capital. The girls, aged 14-16, received intensive training in information technology, graphic design, photography and advertising from FNA instructors. The original program was so successful that Fotokids has expanded it to other high-risk barrios in Guatemala City. Outreach Projects All of our outreach classes are supervised and facilitated by FNA graduates who come from the destitute areas where they teach. These neighborhoods are rife with gang activity and young people live in the daily fear of violence, murder and extortion. Six stunts graduated for the program and two received university scholarships and work inhouse for Fotokids. We hired another to work with our sponsoship program. One of our previos grads who was teaching was hired as a graphic designer for an upscale agency. Another fo the grils received a full scholarship to Landivar University and the oters are working for relatives who have private businesses. We have begun a new project with 15 girls in 2015 and have begun a class with boys as well.$21,652$21,652
New program described in Part III line 2 - California Central Valley serves children working with their families as agricultural labor in the Cutler Orosi school system. We have expanded into 3 additional schools and serve 60 students$11,200$11,200
We expanded the grant to Honduras' photography and graphic design environmental educational program GUARUMA with a scholarship program for youth in this isolated rural area of Honduras. Most if not all of these children would not have the resources to attend school without these scholarships. This program was founded by Fotokids in the year 2000 after the devastation form hurricane Mitch. Funding for this organization aside from Fotokids has come from the IAF and Global Fund for children. We just provide funding for the photography director who teaches classes to 70 students ages 9 through 17 and the scholarship program.Honduras Project: Fotokids' NGO in Honduras Guaruma works with communities living on the edge of a national park and uses photography and graphic design with communities to explore environmental education issues around the Cangrejal river watershed. Fotokids scholarship program has raised education levels from just 10% of young people continuing their education past the 6th grade primary, to 90%. Students have given lectures on ecology in over 50 rural Honduran schools, taught computers and photography in the school system, work as representatives with the National Park service, serve as professional guides on a nature trail they created and built, and designed and operated an interactive nature museum. Their award winning photographs have appeared in prestigious magazines such as Nature's best and Ranger Rick. A Guaruma student has been a finalist twice in the BBC Young Nature Photographers competition-$9,100$9,100
