Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The process for reviewing the Form 990 is that the treasurer prepares the draft return, circulates it to the board members for review, and addresses any questions or corrections before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Fotokids requires all officers, directors, and key employees to complete and sign an annual conflict of interest disclosure form. The board reviews these disclosures each year and addresses any reported conflicts in accordance with the policy. Any potential conflicts identified during the year are reviewed at the next board meeting, and actions taken are documented in the minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Fotokids makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request. Copies of these documents may be obtained by contacting the organization via the mailing address, phone number, or email address listed in this Form 990. In addition, the organization's IRS Form 990 is available for public inspection on the Guidestar/Candid website, and a link to these filings is provided on the Fotokids website.

IRS990/Desc0Fotokids programs continue to focus on job skills that set our students apart from the 200,000 young people entering the workforce every year, increasing their chances of employment in a competitive job market. Portfolios created by the students include work done for actual clients, such as editorial and event photography, designing and photographing commercial catalogs, and creating web pages. Guatemala City remains the hub for all our programs throughout Guatemala, and all our staff are graduates of Fotokids. We operate an intern program for teenage students, providing them with on-the-job training and real-world experience working with clients. In addition to vocational training, Fotokids provides, through Fundacion de Ninos Artistas de Guatemala, counseling, tutoring, and experience working with international professionals in photography and design. Fotokids continues to offer nutritious meals, transportation, and psychosocial support, ensuring students are not only educated but also supported holistically. In-person classes, workshops, and exhibitions remain central to our curriculum and impact.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Since its inception in 1991, Fotokids (originally under our prior fiscal sponsor, the San Carlos Foundation) has utilized photography, graphic design and media technology as tools for self-expression, creativity, leadership and vocational training experience with hundreds of youths from poor rural and urban areas. The majority of our students, in addition to learning employable skills with Fotokids, receive scholarships to study in formal schools from the level of primary education through university.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In Santiago Atitlan, our students learn in an inspiring and purpose-built environment that includes a teaching garden, pergola, and custom-designed classroom. Hands-on learning in photography and digital design gives students marketable skills and a space to express their creativity. In response to ongoing economic hardship in the region, Fotokids also provides families with food baskets and nutritional support. As the Santiago program grows, our team remains committed to innovative solutions that ensure educational access and community wellness for all participating families.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Our scholarship program in Santiago Atitlan and Guatemala City provides children with access to formal and vocational education from primary through secondary school, including a growing number of college scholarships. The program covers tuition, school supplies, uniforms, and transportation, enabling students to focus on their studies without financial stress. By supporting higher education, we open doors to advanced career opportunities and empower underprivileged youth to achieve their full potential. This investment in education helps break the cycle of poverty and creates a brighter future for youth in Central America.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The process for reviewing the Form 990 is that the treasurer prepares the draft return, circulates it to the board members for review, and addresses any questions or corrections before filing.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Fotokids requires all officers, directors, and key employees to complete and sign an annual conflict of interest disclosure form. The board reviews these disclosures each year and addresses any reported conflicts in accordance with the policy. Any potential conflicts identified during the year are reviewed at the next board meeting, and actions taken are documented in the minutes.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Fotokids makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request. Copies of these documents may be obtained by contacting the organization via the mailing address, phone number, or email address listed in this Form 990. In addition, the organization's IRS Form 990 is available for public inspection on the Guidestar/Candid website, and a link to these filings is provided on the Fotokids website.
