The research foundation invests in health-centered programs and partnerships that benefit health care students and professionals, patients, and people in the kansas city community.

The mission of the research foundation is to strengthen the community and empower people to live healthier lives through our health education and scholarship programs.

The finance committee, which is appointed by the board of directors, is responsible for reviewing the form 990 on an annual basis.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The members of the board of directors are provided with a copy of the conflict of interest policy and a duality of interest questionnaire. They are required to fill out the questionnaire which discloses any possible conflicts of interest. The chairman of the board and the president review these annually to determine if any conflicts exist.

The compensation committee of the board of directors is responsible for preparing and approving the total compensation of the foundation's president & ceo to ensure that compensation paid is reasonable and does not result in excessive and inappropriate benefit to private individuals. The committee shall review and approve executive compensation on an annual basis.

Contribution of cass community health foundation's net assets at year end 698,845.

Federal Footnote

On august 15, 2003 all of the assets of the cass community health foundation were transferred to the research foundation, a section 501(c)(3) organization, for management of the funds. Annually, all contributions, grants and earnings received are transferred to the research foundation. The cass community health foundation will continue to operate and remain an active organization and direct the distribution of these contributions, grants and earnings received for the benefit of the youth in cass county and surrounding areas.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The endowment funds of the organization will be used to carryout the exempt activities of the organization in accordance with donor restrictions, if any.

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation's present accounting policy for the evaluation of uncertain tax positions is to review those positions on an annual basis. A liability would be recorded in the financial statements during the period which, based on all available evidence, management believes it is more likely than not that the tax position would not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities and the liability would be incurred by the foundation.

OF THOSE SERVED, 72 MEDICAID OR LOW-INCOME UNINSURED PATIENTS RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND THE CLASS SERIES. INJURY PREVENTION FOR YOUTHONGOING SUPPORT WAS PROVIDED TO BRING THE RESEARCH FOUNDATION THINKFIRST BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAM INTO AREA ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOLS. THE GOAL IS TO BRING AN UNDERSTANDING AND PREVENTION OF HEAD AND SPINAL CORD INJURIES SINCE THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE FOR THESE PERMANENT AND DEBILITATING INJURIES. A TOTAL OF 141 PROGRAMS WERE HELD, REACHING 39,010 YOUTH IN THE GREATER KANSAS CITY AREA. IN ADDITION, THE RESEARCH FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO COORDINATE AND MANAGE THE YOUNG TRAFFIC OFFENDERS PROGRAM (YTOP). THIS PROGRAM OFFERS JUDGES A WAY TO DETER YOUNG PEOPLE FROM SPEEDING, DRUNKEN DRIVING, INATTENTIVE DRIVING BEHAVIORS AND OTHER RELATED DRIVING OFFENSES. DURING THE YTOP PROGRAM, PARTICIPANTS FOLLOW THE PATH THEY WOULD TAKE AFTER BEING SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A CAR CRASH. APPROXIMATELY 464 YOUNG DRIVERS ATTENDED YTOP DURING 2013. NURSING EDUCATIONSCHOLARSHIPS WERE PROVIDED TO UNDERGRADUATE NURSING STUDENTS WHO ATTEND AVILA UNIVERSITY, RESEARCH COLLEGE OF NURSING/ROCKHURST UNIVERSITY AND WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE. A TOTAL OF 39 SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED TO NURSING STUDENTS TOTALING $114,775.A TOTAL OF NINE SCHOLARSHIPS WERE PROVIDED TO STUDENTS STUDYING RADIOLOGY TECHNOLOGY AND NUCLEAR MEDICINE. TEN SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED TO NURSES INTERESTED IN OBTAINING A MSN IN NURSING EDUCATION. AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS WERE PROVIDED FOR NURSING FACULTY MEMBERS AT AVILA UNIVERSITY, RESEARCH COLLEGE OF NURSING/ROCKHURST UNIVERSITY AND WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE WHO WERE SEEKING TO IMPROVE THEIR KNOWLEDGE THROUGH DOCTORAL STUDY, SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY AND SPECIAL PROJECTS.SCHOLARSHIPS WERE PROVIDED TO NINE AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE SUMMER NURSING EXPERIENCE CAMP AT RESEARCH COLLEGE OF NURSING/ROCKHURST UNIVERSITY AND EXPLORE NURSING AS A CAREER. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATIONTHE RESEARCH FOUNDATION COORDINATED AND SPONSORED THREE FULL-DAY CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION SYMPOSIUMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ED BIXBY INSTITUTE FOR POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION AND POSTGRADUATE INSTITUTE FOR MEDICINE. SYMPOSIUMS FOCUSED ON CANCER, CARDIOLOGY AND PRIMARY CARE.COMMUNITY PROGRAMSTHE RESEARCH FOUNDATION ORGANIZED AND HOSTED A COMMUNITY-WIDE HEALTH FAIR ATTENDED BY MORE THAN 1,200 PEOPLE FROM THE URBAN CORE OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. THE PURPOSE OF THE EVENT IS TO MOTIVATE AND ENCOURAGE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES. ATTENDEES HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SCREENED FOR THE FOLLOWING: BLOOD GLUCOSE, BLOOD PRESSURE, BODYMASS INDEX, CHOLESTEROL, DENTAL, FOOT, GLAUCOMA, HIV AND POSTURE HEALTH. THEY ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE INFORMATION FROM MORE THAN 90 HEALTH-RELATED BOOTHS REPRESENTED BY VARIOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS.
