Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The georges bank cod fixed gear sector represents a proactive group of small, dayboat fishermen on cape cod that have voluntarily come together to cooperatively manage annual allocations of fish. Its members agree to fish within sustainable limits and to stop fishing once quotas have been met, thereby, protecting fish populations for future generations. The federal government (i.e. National marine fisheries service) has agreed to provide these quotas to the sector, which includes fishermen who have developed and incorporated their organization in compliance with state and federal tax requirements.

The policy is completed by the sector manager. The policy is occasionally updated at the advice of legal council. All new bod members and new staff (if making purchase decisions) fill out the conflict of interest statement. Once a year, the bod and staff are asked to update their statements, usually around the annual bod meeting. In terms of enforcing the coi policy, it is really self policing unless others know of the conflict and bring it to the attention of the executives. Board members may abstain from a vote if they feel they have a conflict of interest, whether it is in the statement or not.
