The mission of the lower clark fork watershed group (lcfwg) is to facilitate collaboration among watershed stakeholders and to coordinate efforts to maintain, enhance and restore the ecological integrity of tributaries to the lower clark fork river. Our work focuses primarily on in-stream and on-the-ground restoration projects that improve water quality and enhance habitat for bull trout and west slope cutthroat trout.
Develop and implement a coordinated ecosystem approach to maintaining, and where necessary to restore the chemical, biological and physical integrity of the tributaries of the lower clark fork river to benefit native fish populations and to protect water quality.

| The Lower Clark Fork Watershed Group (LCFWG) works to connect watershed stakeholders and facilitate collaboration among them in order to identify, fund, implement and monitor restoration projects in the tributaries of the Lower Clark Fork River. In 2015 the LCFWG held multiple meetings for all members and partners and actively worked to follow-up and coordinate continued efforts on all ongoing watershed projects. They are involved in the planning, fund raising, coordination, contracting, administration and ongoing monitoring of multiple projects in the watershed. In 2015 these included:- Bull River Re-vegetation: The LCFWG has continued a multi-phased effort to re-vegetate areas along the Bull River. The Bull River has been transformed by land clearing, diking, straightening and invasion of a non-native grass called reed canary grass. This grass forms dense cover over a great area and prevents the natural re-vegetation of many desirable riparian species, most importantly, woody trees and shrubs. While growing into a thick mat over the surface of the soil, the grass has a shallow root system that greatly reduced bank stability and increased sediment additions to the Bull River, which affected the river's water quality and the quality of habitat for native fish. In 2015 the FCFWG continued ongoing efforts to improve the health of riparian areas along the river by planting native tree and shrub species and replacing reed canary grass with species better able to stabilize the banks of the river and create habitat for native fish and wildlife.- Granite Creek Road obliteration: In 2015 LCFWG also secured funding to decommission 1.5 miles of road along Granite Creek, a tributary to the East Fork of Trout Creek. LCFWG solicited bids and hired a local contractor who completed the road decommissioning in summer of 2015. This project removed the primary sediment source to Granite Creek and Trout Creek by returning the road to original contours and has restored the creek to its original channel with more natural channel geometry which benefited both west-slope cutthroat and bull trout.- Miners Gulch Stream and Riparian Restoration Project: During 2015 the LCFWG worked to secure funding for a large channel reconstruction project on the Vermilion River and associated re-vegetation efforts in 11 acres of floodplain. This project will be implemented in 2016 and 2017. | $53,356 | $53,356 |
