Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the lower clark fork watershed group (lcfwg) is to facilitate collaboration among watershed stakeholders and to coordinate efforts to maintain, enhance and restore the ecological integrity of tributaries to the lower clark fork river. Our work focuses primarily on in-stream and on-the-ground restoration projects that improve water quality and enhance habitat for bull trout and west slope cutthroat trout.

Develop and implement a coordinated ecosystem approach to maintaining, and where necessary to restore the chemical, biological and physical integrity of the tributaries of the lower clark fork river to benefit native fish populations and to protect water quality.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Lower Clark Fork Watershed Group was involved in planning, fund raising, project coordination, contracting and administration of two major projects in 2014 including the following: LCFWG was involved in securing multi-year grants from various local and governmental agencies to undertake measures to improve water quality and fish habitat in the Bull River watershed. A large portion of the project will be working with local landowners to plant native trees and shrubs in riparian (riverfront) areas along the river. This effort will strengthen the river's banks and restore healthy stream conditions. Over many years, native trees and shrubs along the Bull River have been lost to land clearing. Remaining areas have succumbed to a takeover by non-native grass species - most notably reed canary grass. Able to form solid cover over many acres, reed canary grass has thrived but its shallow root systems have greatly reduced bank stability along the Bull River, which in turn has affected the river's water quality and habitat for fish. Our project will restore riparian areas along the river by planting native tree and shrub species that will stabilize soils and, through time, return river banks to a natural riparian forest. Continued monitoring and maintenance of each site will be an integral part of the long-term project. This project also includes work in the Dry Creek drainage where sediment from roads has impacted water quality. A tributary to Bull River, Dry Creek is located on land managed by the US Forest Service in the Kootenai National Forest. The LCFWG is also in the process of securing grant funding for two other major projects listed below: Miners Gulch: This project will (1) significantly reduce high levels of fine sediment that threaten bull trout and west-slope cutthroat trout spawning success; (2) improve the quantity and quality of spawning habitat in several miles of the river; and (3) facilitate the future implementation of other downstream fish habitat improvement and restoration project in this priority watershed. Granite Creek: This project involves the failing riparian road that exists directly adjacent to Granite Creek, a tributary to Trout Creek. The majority of the Granite Creek road system is located low in the drainage and is entirely within the Granite Creek floodplain. Approximately 90% of the road is within 50 feet of the stream channel and 30% of the road is directly adjacent or has been intercepted by Granite Creek. The entire road prism is directly within the RHCA. The surveys completed indicate that roughly 19% of the road system has completely failed, 11% has an immediate threat of potential road failure and another 24% has future potential for failure.$23,145$23,145
