IRS990/Desc0IN 2016, THE BATC FOUNDATION COMPLETED SIX PROJECTS, INCLUDING BLUEBIRD HOUSE -- A WHOLE HOUSE REMODEL THAT WAS STARTED IN THE FALL OF 2015. MANY OF THE 2016 PROJECTS FOCUSED ON VETERANS. THESE INCLUDED THE REMODELING OF PORTIONS OF AN OAK PARK HOME THAT BELONGS TO AN IRAQI WAR VETERAN AND HIS TERMINALLY ILL WIFE. THIS INCLUDED REPLACING KITCHEN APPLIANCES AND FLOORING, A NEW WASHER AND DRYER SET, NEW FLOORING IN THE LIVING ROOM AND A BATHROOM, LANDSCAPING, AND THE STRUCTURAL SUPPORT OF THE HOUSE'S FOUNDATION, INCLUDING REMOVING A CEMENT SLAB THAT WAS SINKING INTO THE BASEMENT. A THIRD PROJECT INVOLVED REPLACING THE SIDING OF A DISABLED VETERAN'S HOME BECAUSE OF SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE BY BIRDS. THE BIRDS WERE LIVING IN THE WALLS OF HIS DAUGHTER'S BEDROOM AND SHE WAS TOO SCARED TO SLEEP IN HER ROOM. THE FOURTH PROJECT REPLACED THE ROOF OF A KOREAN WAR VETERAN IN BELLE PLAINE WHOSE HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COMPANY WAS THREATENING TO CANCEL HIS POLICY UNLESS THE ROOF WAS REPLACED. THE FIFTH PROJECT REPLACED THE ROOF OF AN ELDERLY COUPLE WHO WAS IN THE SAME SITUATION -- THEIR INSURANCE COMPANY WAS THREATENING TO CANCEL THEIR POLICY UNLESS THEIR ROOF WAS REPLACED. THE HUSBAND HAD SUFFERED WITH UNDIAGNOSED LYME'S DISEASE FOR MANY YEARS AND IS DISABLED. HIS WIFE WORKS PART TIME. THEIR INCOME WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO PAY FOR THE ROOF. THE SIXTH PROJECT INVOLVED REPLACING A ROOF FOR A LOW INCOME FAMILY WHOSE FINANCES WERE FURTHER HAMPERED BY LARGE MEDICAL BILLS THAT WERE INCURRED WHEN THE WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION WITH THEIR MINI-VAN. ONE OF THEIR CHILDREN WAS KILLED AND SHE WAS LEFT WITH SEVERAL PERMANENT DISABILITIES. ALL OF THESE PROJECTS WERE COMPLETED WITH NO COST TO THE HOMEOWNERS.
