Mission

For patients with blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, or other life-threatening blood disorders, there is hope for a cure through marrow transplantation. The first step is to find a matched donor, but 70% percent of patients do not have a suitably matched donor in their family, and depend on our be the match registry to find a marrow donor. With the support of our contributors, each year, we: - facilitate more marrow and cord blood transplants - grow and diversify the world's largest and most diverse donor registry - support patients and their families before, during and after transplant - conduct research and education to expand treatment and improve outcomes - engage the public in our life-saving mission. As the world's leading nonprofit organization focused on saving lives through cellular therapy, be the match continues to improve access to transplant by leading efforts to remove barriers to treatment and strengthen our ability to meet the growing need. Major Activities

Activity 2
The Search Assistance is a pre-transplant grant program that provides guarantees of payment for search and/or procurement costs, enabling patients to proceed to search without delays caused by financial and/or insurance barriers. This year 679 individuals received awards. The Transplant Support Assistance is a post-transplant grant program that provides direct financial assistance to families in financial need, to help with uncovered post-transplant expenses, such as food, ground transportation, lodging, co-pays, and insurance premiums. This year 1,037 patient distributions occurred. The Donor Assistance program helps certain donors that will suffer a hardship when they take time off work to make a donation. For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2011, 137 donors received assistance.

Be The Match Foundation has a strong dedication to transplant research and sequence database mapping. Research-driven innovations make transplants a viable treatment for more patients. Funding clinical trials, both pediatric and adult, continues to be a priority, giving doctors new tools that impact a patient's survival rate as well as his or her quality of life. Research is conducted in order to create better cellular transplant therapies for survival and quality of life. Six research awards were granted.

IRS990/Description0The financial support contributed to Be the Match Foundation ("BTMF") brings together the best minds in medicine and science, with the most altruistic hearts of everyday people. Together with public support, BTMF serves thousands of patients with leukemia, lymphoma and 70 other life-threatening diseases who need a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant but have no donor match in their family. With a unbeatable combination of committed partners and generous supporters, BMTF helps save lives. As BTMF looks ahead to the growing number of patients who need its help, it is clear that it needs to do more. That is why the public will see BTMF focus more of its fundraising efforts on adding more potential donors from diverse populations to the Be The Match Registry. See Schedule O.Patients are most likely to match a donor who shares their racial and ethnic background and our registry must better represent the patients who need our help. During FY11, over 450,000 people were added to the Be The Match Registry, and 5,573 transplants were performed.
