Major Activities

Activity 2
FoodShelfIn 2012, CAPI maintained increased levels of service at our Southeast Asian Food Shelf in response to high need. In 2012 1780 average individuals served per month and distributed 278,899 pounds of food. Higher levels of service are tied to the continued economic recession and the specific challenges it has created for the Southeast Asian community in the Twin Cities. B. Healthy Food AND GARDEN:CAPI staff continued to support 4 community gardens in the North Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center area. These gardens provide healthy food, physical exercise, and an opportunity for community engagement for over 60 immigrant families. Many families participated in the CAPI Garden Block Party and the HUBS Appreciation Day event sponsored by Gardening Matters. Each of the gardens also donated fresh produce to CAPIs food shelf through the Garden Gleaning Project. In addition, 7 corner stores in Minneapolis have been recruited to increase availability and quality of fresh produce.
Activity 3
Health and CaregiverA. CAPIs SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Program) in colloboration with two Minneapolis Public Housing Authority residences Glendale Townhomes and Franklin Terrace resulted in the establishment of two smoke free policies, a culturally appropriate exercise program and healthy eating initiatives including two community gardens and a farmers market ended in May 2012. All community changes were driven by community members standing up to make a difference in their neighborhoods. B.Hmong Elder and Caregiver: The Elder and Caregiver program served 84 unduplicated low-income Hmong caregivers and elders by providing them with culturally tailored ongoing coaching services and access assistance based on their needs assessment. Overall, CAPI met or exceeded the goals of grant. A total of 511 individuals, predominantly Hmong, received culturally appropriate services. Ninety Hmong caregivers received caregiving consultation and coaching at-home or at CAPIs offices. One-hundred and eighty caregivers and care receivers received access assistance on a variety of issues, participated in monthly support groups facilitated by CAPIs Eldercare Advocate, and engaged in cultural enrichment projects such as community gardening, voter education and other field trips. C. Generate civic participation and Advocacy: During the 2012 election season, CAPI registered 416 voters and collected pledges to vote from 426 voters. CAPI contacted over 2,000 voters via phone calls, door-knocking, tabling and other types of outreach. In addition, CAPI with other organizational partners hosted a candidate forum at New Millennium Academy, a Hmong charter school in North Minneapolis. The forum featured 8 candidates for state and local offices, and was attended by 200+ CAPI participants, staff, partner organizations, and neighborhood residents. Live translation services were provided to more than 50 participants in Hmong, Lao, and Karen. On Election Day, CAPIs main office on Lake Street were the headquarters for The Minnesota Collaborative, a local nonpartisan effort to get out the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) vote in Minnesota. The Collaborative is a coalition of Asian American serving nonprofit organizations in the Twin Cities. The Collaboratives get out the vote (GOTV) operation was one of the largest APIA-focused operations in the country. The Minnesota Collaborative reached out to over 13,000 Asian Americans, recruited over 900 volunteer shifts, and interpreted and gave over 600 rides. D. Eliminating Health Disparities (EHDI)CAPIs EHDI program to increase immunization rates in the Somali, Lao, Hmong and Karen/Burmese communities reached over 259 unduplicated individuals this quarter. CAPI and Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota (LACM) assisted 59 individuals to receive immunizations.
