“Dfc-wrc (western racine county) - our western racine county program provides prevention and life skills by networking the community around our youth to help them make healthy choices. This network has some 40 volunteers and addresses substance use and abuse as well as developing assets to inform and educate all twelve sectors of the community. Uw lifeskills - united way lifeskills is the successor program to substance abuse prevention. Funding by united way of racine county is utilized for this three year program that begins in 5th grade. Lifeskills has been proven to be highly effective. It teaches information about drugs and combats the underlying causes of substance abuse. The program covers the three critical domains found to fight drug use: drug resistance skills, personal self-management skills, and general social skills. Lifeskills consists of eight lessons for 6th graders and six lessons for 7th graders. Afa-young adults - a new program very similar to advancing family assets, except that it services the young adult demographic of people aged 17-28. It uses a coaching model to help young people reach goals in the areas of income, education, and health. During their 9-12 month involvement in afa-yap, each client works their coach to develop an individual plan for success, build skills, connect with resources, and move toward their goals. Afa-yap clients increase their financial literacy, gain and maintain full-time employment, enroll or continue in adult education programs, and improve their physical and mental health.”
