Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The prepared form 990 is reviewed and approved by the members of the board of directors; it is reviewed by the executive director and the treasurer prior to its filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All directors and officers annually complete and sign a conflict of interest statement. The governing body reviews these statements to determine whether a conflict exists and also reviews any actual conflicts. Any person with a conflict is prohibited from participating in the governing body's deliberations and decisions in the transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The board of directors is the only entity authorized to extend offers of employment to candidates for the position of executive director. The executive director's compensation is determined by the board of directors at the time of hire and is reviewed annually. The compensation level considers comparable positions at similar organizations in the region. Information is typically pulled from compensation surveys by reliable sources as well as compensation information filed publicly with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY SERVICES - THE GOAL OF COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS IS TO DECREASE ISOLATION AND PROVIDE SAFETY PLANNING, SUPPORT, INFORMATION AND REFERRALS TO VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. CRISIS INTERVENTION INCLUDES THE 24-HOUR HELP LINE, LEAP (LAW ENFORCEMENT ADVOCATE PARTNERSHIP), AND WALK-IN SERVICES. THE FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL HELP LINE IS THE GATEWAY THROUGH WHICH CLIENTS CAN ACCESS ALL DAIS SERVICES. THE HELP LINE IS PRIMARILY STAFFED BY VOLUNTEERS. HELP LINE ADVOCATES PROVIDE SUPPORT, INFORMATION, REFERRALS TO OTHER DAIS SERVICES OR OTHER COMMUNITY AGENCIES, AND SAFETY PLANNING. IN 2019, THIS LINE FIELDED 15,618 CALLS. DAIS MAY ALSO HAVE CLIENTS WALK IN FOR SERVICES. WALK-IN APPOINTMENTS ARE BRIEF APPOINTMENTS AND MIRROR HELP LINE CALLS WITH VICTIMS/SURVIVORS BEING OFFERED SUPPORT, INFORMATION AND REFERRALS TO DAIS AND OTHER COMMUNITY AGENCIES, AND SAFETY PLANNING. LEAP (LAW ENFORCEMENT ADVOCATE PARTNERSHIP) - LEAP MORE QUICKLY CONNECTS VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE CITY OF MADISON WITH THE ADVOCACY SERVICES PROVIDED BY DAIS. BECAUSE OF VARIOUS BARRIERS, MANY VICTIMS DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VICTIM ADVOCACY SERVICES AFTER A DOMESTIC ABUSE ARREST. THE LEAP PROGRAM IS A JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN THE MADISON POLICE DEPARTMENT AND DAIS FOCUSED ON REACHING OUT TO VICTIMS TO OVERCOME THESE BARRIERS AND OFFER SUPPORTIVE SERVICES. IN 2019, OFFICERS COMPLETED 895 REFERRALS TO DAIS. COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES - THIS INCLUDES FACE-TO-FACE COMMUNITY RESPONSE SERVICES AND SUPPORT GROUPS. IN 2019, THE COMMUNITY RESPONSE PROGRAM SERVED 352 CLIENTS AND THE SUPPORT GROUP PROGRAM SERVED 130 CLIENTS. COMMUNITY RESPONSE SERVICES PROVIDE CLIENTS WITH FACE-TO-FACE EMERGENCY SAFETY PLANNING WITH TRAINED ADVOCATES, BASIC RESTRAINING ORDER ASSISTANCE, HOUSING INFORMATION, SUPPORT, AND REFERRALS TO OTHER COMMUNITY RESOURCES. MEETINGS CAN BE HELD AT DAIS AS WELL AS AT SAFE, CONFIDENTIAL PARTNERSHIP SITES ACROSS DANE COUNTY INCLUDING HOSPITALS, CLINICS, LIBRARIES, OR OTHER HUMAN SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS. THERE ARE SITES LOCATED BOTH WITHIN MADISON AND IN RURAL COMMUNITIES IN DANE COUNTY TO INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY OF SERVICES TO VICTIMS LIVING IN RURAL AREAS. SUPPORT GROUP - DAIS SUPPORT GROUPS HELP MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY DECREASE THEIR ISOLATION, INCREASE THEIR SAFETY, AND CONNECT WITH OTHER DAIS SURVIVORS. DAIS OFFERS UP TO FOUR WEEKLY SUPPORT GROUPS FOR ANYONE WHO IDENTIFIES AS A FEMALE VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, INCLUDING ONE FOR WOMEN OVER THE GAGE OF 50, AND UP TO ONE WEEKLY SUPPORT GROUP FOR MALE-IDENTIFIED VICTIMS. DAIS ALSO OFFERS ONE MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUP FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SURVIVORS.VOLUNTEERS - VOLUNTEERS ARE CRITICAL TO THE OPERATION OF DAIS PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. IN 2019 THERE WERE 163 ACTIVE VOLUNTEERS THAT SERVED THE ORGANIZATION BY VOLUNTEERING DIRECTLY WITH CLIENTS IN EACH OF ITS PROGRAMS AND BY SUPPORTING DAIS COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS. IN TOTAL, VOLUNTEERS ESTIMATED 8,545 HOURS IN SERVICE TO DAIS.

LEGAL ADVOCATES ARE NOT LAWYERS AND DO NOT PROVIDE LEGAL ADVICE. THE WORK OF THE DAIS LEGAL ADVOCATES MAY INCLUDE ASSISTING CLIENTS IN FILING FOR RESTRAINING ORDERS, DEVELOPING SAFETY PLANS WITH CLIENTS, PREPARING CLIENTS FOR INJUNCTION HEARINGS, PROVIDING SUPPORT TO CLIENTS DURING HEARINGS AND ADVOCATING ON BEHALF OF CLIENTS WITHIN THE CRIMINAL, CIVIL, AND FAMILY COURT SYSTEMS OR WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS. IN 2019, THE DAIS LEGAL ADVOCATES SERVED 804 UNDUPLICATED CLIENTS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0CHILDREN'S SERVICES - THE DAIS CHILDREN'S PROGRAM OFFERS PROGRAMMING FOR CHILDREN RESIDING IN THE EMERGENCY SHELTER OR FOR CHILDREN FROM THE COMMUNITY WHOSE PARENTS ARE UTILIZING ANOTHER DAIS SERVICE. AROUND HALF OF OUR SHELTER RESIDENTS ARE CHILDREN. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAMMING IS TO PROVIDE CHILDREN FROM VIOLET HOMES WITH PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL SAFETY, STRUCTURE AND CONSISTENCY, OPPORTUNITIES TO PROCESS THEIR FEELINGS THROUGH PLAY AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES, EXPERIENCE WITH POSITIVE DISCIPLINE, AND STRATEGIES FOR SELF-REGULATION AND COPING STRATEGIES. PROGRAMMING INCLUDES RECREATIONAL GROUPS, AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL AND SUPPORT GROUPS. PARENTING SUPPORT AND PARENT/CHILD BONDING ACTIVITIES ARE ALSO PROVIDED TO PARENTS WHO ARE UTILIZING DAIS SERVICES IN ORDER TO AID IN HEALING THE PARENT-CHILD BOND. IN 2019, DAIS SERVED 148 CHILDREN THROUGH STRUCTURED CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING ALSO PROVIDED PARENTING SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY FOR 50 ADULTS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1PREVENTION, TRAINING AND EDUCATION - DAIS OFFERS A PRIMARY PREVENTION PROGRAM CALLED MEN ENCOURAGING NON-VIOLENT STRENGTH (MENS) CLUBS THAT BRING TOGETHER YOUNG MEN TO ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES OF INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE SO THAT THEY CAN BE LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES TO INTERRUPT THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE. ADDITIONALLY, DAIS DELIVERS COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND SKILLS-BASED TRAINING, WORKING THROUGHOUT THE DANE COUNTY COMMUNITY TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND PROMOTE HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS. THE CAPE (COMMUNITY AWARENESS PREVENTION EDUCATION) PROGRAM OFFERS WORKSHOPS, PRESENTATIONS AND TRAININGS TAILORED FOR SPECIFIC GROUPS INCLUDING COMMUNITY GROUPS, SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND FAITH-BASED GROUPS. IN ADDITION, THIS PROGRAM HELPS TO ENSURE THAT THE ORGANIZATION'S OUTREACH EFFORTS TO BOTH THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE AND TO VICTIMS WHO MAY NEED SERVICES ARE COORDINATED AND COMPREHENSIVE. IN 2019, DAIS GAVE A TOTAL OF 208 PRESENTATIONS AND TRAININGS AND REACHED OVER 3,440 INDIVIDUALS.
