Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Turning point has been providing a safety net for adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence in the metro detroit area since 1980. Our mission is to provide programs and resources that enable survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to regain control of their lives.

Turning point empowers survivors of domestic and sexual violence through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence.

The executive committee has the authority to act on behalf of the board. On the executive committee sits the board chair, board vice chair - internal operations, board vice chair - external, secretary & treasurer. The executive committee sets the board strategy & direction, works closely with the ceo, provides the annual evaluation of the ceo, and handles business between board meetings.

The finance committee is provided a draft 990 tax return to review. After their review, the draft 990 tax return is presented to the board of directors so they can vote to amend or to approve.

The conflict of interest policy is part of the yearly board monitoring calendar which yearly reviews governance policies and by-laws and is signed by all board members. It is the responsibility of every board member to state any potential conflict of interest they may pose at any given time during discussion and voting on an issue. All board members are reminded annually of the conflict of interest policy during their self evaluation.

Turning point has established salary ranges that are reviewed by an internal human resources committee and the board of directors. The established salary ranges are set after comparing turning point salaries to other non-profit organizations in southeast michigan. The ceo salary is determined by the board of directors within the set salary ranges. Other key staff salaries are set by the ceo based upon each staff's experience and education within the set salary ranges.

Turning point, inc. Has received notification that it qualifies as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the u.s. Internal revenue code and corresponding provisions of state law and, accordingly, is not subject to federal or state income taxes. Based on its evaluation, the organization has concluded that there are no significant uncertain tax positions requiring recognition in its financial statements. EMERGENCY SHELTER- SINCE 1980, (40+ YEARS) THE SHELTER PROGRAM HAS OPERATED 24/7/365 AS A VITAL PART OF THE SAFETY NET IN METRO DETROIT THAT SUPPORTS AND PROTECTS FAMILIES FLEEING FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, SEXUAL VIOLENCE, OR HUMAN TRAFFICKING. LAST YEAR APPROXIMATELY 150 PRESENTATIONS WERE FACILITATED TO OVER 2,500 ADULTS. PREVENTION EDUCATION WORKS WITH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FACILITATING TRAININGS ON DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL VIOLENCE, AND GENDER SOCIALIZATION. LAST YEAR THEY COMPLETED APPROXIMATELY 400 TRAININGS TO OVER 11,500 MACOMB COUNTY YOUTH. ADDITIONALLY, THIS YEAR THEY CONTINUED TO EXPAND THEIR PROGRAM TO 1 ADDITIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SPECIALLY TRAINED NURSES AND ADVOCATES PROVIDE IMMEDIATE CRISIS INTERVENTION, MEDICAL CARE AND EVIDENCE COLLECTION TO SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS. THIS PROGRAM ALSO PROVIDES STRANGULATION ASSESSMENT SERVICES, FOLLOW UP COUNSELING SERVICES, EXPERT WITNESS TESTIMONY IN COURT HEARINGS AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MEDICAL PERSONNEL.LAST YEAR THEY PROVIDED SERVICES TO 377 INDIVIDUALS.TURNING POINT HAS BEEN OPERATING A RESALE SHOP CALLED SECOND HAND ROSE FOR OVER 30 YEARS. THE STORE PROVIDES CLOTHING AND OTHER ESSENTIALS TO FAMILIES ENTERING SHELTER AND UPON LEAVING TO SET UP HOUSEHOLDS.DURING FY22, THE HUMAN TRAFFICKING PROGRAM WAS ADDED TO HELP IDENTIFY AND RESCUE VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING FROM THE STREETS OF OUR COMMUNITY.
