Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Turning point has been providing a safety net for adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence in the metro detroit area since 1980. Our mission is to provide programs and resources that enable survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to regain control of their lives.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Emergency shelter & crisis line - turning point's shelter provides immediate safety, crisis intervention and resources to families in danger of violence. The shelter program is part of a multi faceted approach to ending the cycle of violence in families. Turning point also provides comprehensive services to children while in shelter and after they leave. Children in shelter receive crisis counseling, tutorial assistance, safety planning, recreation activities, family night activities, support and education, 7 days per week. During the summer months turning point provides a summer camp for children in shelter that provide field trips and other fun activities. The program also operates a 24-hour crisis line which provides information, support and crisis intervention to over 10,000 callers per year.
Activity 3
Support services - support services staff provide individual and group counseling to adult, adolescent and child survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Counseling services are evaluated by how survivors have increased their feelings of control over their emotions and their life, and their increased knowledge of resources available to them.

IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIV/Explanation0TURNING POINT, INC. HAS RECEIVED NOTIFICATION THAT IT QUALIFIES AS A TAX-EXEMPT ORGANIZATION UNDER SECTION 501 (C)(3) OF THE U.S. INTERNAL REVENUE CODE AND CORRESPONDING PROVISIONS OF STATE LAW AND, ACCORDINGLY, IS NOT SUBJECT TO FEDERAL OR STATE INCOME TAXES. ON OCTOBER 1, 2009, THE ORGANIZATION ADOPTED A STANDARD RELATING TO THE ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES. THE TAX EFFECTS FROM AN UNCERTAIN TAX POSITION CAN BE RECOGNIZED IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, ONLY IF THE POSITION IS MORE LIKELY THAN NOT TO BE SUSTAINED ON AUDIT, BASED ON THE TECHNICAL MERITS OF THE POSITION. THE ORGANIZATION RECOGNIZES THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT BENEFIT OF A TAX POSITION ONLY AFTER DETERMINING THAT THE RELEVANT TAX AUTHORITY WOULD BE MORE LIKELY THAN NOT TO SUSTAIN THE POSITION FOLLOWING AN AUDIT. FOR TAX POSITIONS MEETING THE MORE LIKELY THAN NOT THRESHOLD, THE AMOUNT RECOGNIZED IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS IS THE LARGEST BENEFIT THAT HAS A GREATER THAN 50 PERCENT LIKELIHOOD OF BEING REALIZED, UPON ULTIMATE SETTLEMENT WITH THE RELEVANT TAX AUTHORITY. AT THE ADOPTION DATE, THE ORGANIZATIONS APPLIED THE NEW ACCOUNTING STANDARD TO ALL TAX POSITIONS FOR WHICH THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS REMAINED OPEN. THE ORGANIZATION DID NOT MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENT TO OPENING NET ASSETS AS A RESULT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW ACCOUNTING STANDARD. BASED ON ITS EVALUATION, THE ORGANIZATION HAS CONCLUDED THAT THERE ARE NO SIGNIFICANT UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS REQUIRING RECOGNITION IN ITS FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. THE ORGANIZATION IS NO LONGER SUBJECT TO U.S. FEDERAL INCOME TAX EXAMINATIONS BY THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE FOR THE YEARS BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30,2009. THE ORGANIZATION IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER EXAMINATION BY ANY TAXING JURISDICTION.
