FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Artspace at untitled is an environment designed to stimulate creative thought and new ideas through contemporary art. We are committed to providing access to quality exhibitions, education programs, performances, publications, and to engage the community in collaborative outreach efforts.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Organization to make a lasting impact on the arts curriculum within our partnering public high schools. Each day in the studios, the students learn a printmaking process from start to finish. The education director for artspace at untitled teaches many of these classes, however, on several occasions local artists are brought in to teach the techniques. The students are expected to write about their own process in the form of an artist statement that is edited each month and finally displayed alongside their work for the all-schools art exhibit hosted in the gallery of artspace at untitled at the end of each year. Therefore, the students are not only expected to experiment with different printmaking processes, but also explore making a cohesive body of work through an underlying concept. The creation of their new original works will be on display for youth arts month. As a former high school teacher, our education director believes that art classes should not solely focus on completing assignments; they should also allow students to exercise their natural creative proclivities. Printmaking classes in particular tend to focus on developing basic technical skills and often do not encourage students to explore personal interests, but our program is seeking to change that mentality. While our mentorship program has objectives that must be met, we will work together to meet those in a way that allows the students to grow as young artists. Each studio day generally accompanies a powerpoint over famous artists who have utilized the process or a video that directly correlates with what the students are learning. There is always a writing component each time they come to the gallery; sometimes it is a response over the new exhibition; other times it is an artist's statement over their personal body of work. Although we are working with five schools for the 2017-2018 school year, we are talking to other schools in the oklahoma city area to expand our program to eight schools by the following year. We have implemented a musical component to our outreach initiatives. These are called city sounds, which has centralized over jazz and blues in the deuce because we are located in the historic deep deuce district in oklahoma city. Our goal for 2017 is to expand this and reintroduce our taste of art series as well.

IRS990/Desc0PRESS: WITHIN OUR PRESS PROGRAMMING, WE ARE MOST PROUD OF THE HIGH SCHOOL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH HAS GROWN TO INCLUDE 5 HIGH SCHOOLS. ARTSPACE AT UNTITLED HAS BEEN WORKING FOR SEVERAL YEARS TO IMPLEMENT A PRINTMAKING PROGRAM FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS. WITH THE CURRENT STATE BUDGET CUTS AND THE BACKLASH IT HAS HAD ON PUBLIC SCHOOL ART PROGRAMS, THE ARTSPACE COMMUNITY BELIEVES THIS IS A CRUCIAL TIME FOR US TO EXPAND THE MENTORSHIP OUTREACH PROGRAM. THE FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS WE CURRENTLY WORK WITH BRING THEIR STUDENTS EACH MONTH TO LEARN FOR AN ENTIRE DAY IN A PROFESSIONAL PRINTMAKING STUDIO. WE ASK FOR A THREE-YEAR CONTRACT FROM THE ADMINISTRATORS IN ORDER FOR OUR ORGANIZATION TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT ON THE ARTS CURRICULUM WITHIN OUR PARTNERING PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0GALLERY/EXHIBITION: UNTITLED ARTSPACE BROUGHT IN OVER 6,700 VISITORS WITH ITS EIGHT EXHIBITIONS THIS YEAR, FEATURING WORKS BY LOCAL AND REGIONAL ARTISTS. AS A CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER WE MUST ANNUALLY MAKE CHANGES NOT ONLY TO THE FACILITY, BUT ALSO TO THE PROGRAMMING IN ORDER TO ADAPT TO A CONSTANTLY GROWING AUDIENCE OF ALL AGES. OUR SELECTED EXHIBITS REPRESENTED AN ARRAY OF MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ARTWORK THAT INCLUDED: POETRY, VIDEO, PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, AND PRINTMAKING. THE ARTISTS REPRESENTED WERE FROM A VARIETY OF CULTURES AND BACKGROUNDS, SUCH AS CHINA, PAKISTAN, SUDAN, AND THE USA. THEIR WORK COVERED TOPICS RANGING FROM THE ENVIRONMENT, GENDER INEQUALITIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, RACIAL TENSIONS IN THE 1960'S AND A LARGE-SCALE COLLABORATION BETWEEN POETS AND VISUAL ARTISTS. AS AN ORGANIZATION WE ARE CONSISTENTLY REFINING OUR APPROACH TO THE GALLERY AND EXHIBITION SPACE IN ORDER TO CREATE PROFESSIONAL AND QUALITY INSTALLATIONS. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PROGRAMS: AS WE CONTINUE TO GROW OUR PROGRAMS WE HAVE ENLARGED OUR PRINT SHOP TO INCLUDE LETTERPRESSES, ADDING NEW EQUIPMENT AND OFFERING NEW TECHNOLOGY WITH OLD METHODS. WE HAVE EXTENDED OUR OPEN STUDIO MEMBERSHIPS TO INCLUDE FIBER ARTISTS ALONG WITH OUR LOCAL PRINTMAKERS. WHICH HAS GENERATED MULTIPLE TEXTILE WORKSHOPS IN OUR STUDIO SPACE. NEXT YEAR WE ARE HOSTING A PAPERMAKING WORKSHOP THAT IS APPEALING TO BOTH FIBER ARTISTS AND PRINTMAKERS. WE ARE TRYING TO ESTABLISH A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY WORKSPACE. THIS JANUARY WE WILL BE REINTRODUCING OUR AIR PROGRAM WITH A FIBER ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER. WE EXPECT TO EXPAND THIS PROGRAM WITH 4 LOCAL RESIDENCIES AND 2 VISITING NATIONAL RESIDENCIES IN 2017. ARTSPACE ALSO OPENED A MUSEUM STYLE GIFT SHOP PRIMARILY DEDICATED TO SHOWCASE UNIQUE WORKS OF ART BY OKLAHOMA ARTISTS, WHICH MEETS OUR MISSION OF SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ART COMMUNITY. IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0ARTSPACE AT UNTITLED IS AN ENVIRONMENT DESIGNED TO STIMULATE CREATIVE THOUGHT AND NEW IDEAS THROUGH CONTEMPORARY ART. WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING ACCESS TO QUALITY EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATION PROGRAMS, PERFORMANCES, PUBLICATIONS, AND TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY IN COLLABORATIVE OUTREACH EFFORTS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1ORGANIZATION TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT ON THE ARTS CURRICULUM WITHIN OUR PARTNERING PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS.
